wow... results are unanimous!!

although I am tempted to, at the very least, give this a try when i see my ninja again. I am so curious as to how this is even possible.. are kickstands designed to support 300lbs+? They are supporting our bikes weight when parked - then again, very little weight is being forced on it.

While going to bike nights in South Florida, just about everyone did this. People looked at you funny if you didn't spin your bike this way. Haven't seen any topplings. But I've heard plenty of stories. Just back your bike into the space. It takes the same amount of time...

I did try it once when I was a newbie, and it wasn't nearly as easy as they make it look. It it nice to know it is possible if one ever "needed" to, but realistically 99.999999999% of the time there isn't a need. Think of how many times you have "needed" to spin your car like this. Is your car still stuck because you couldn't spin it on a kickstand?

My old R6 had a weak stand on it, wouldn't have supported all the weight on the bike. I think it was a 2002?
They used to weld on aftermarket supports to the stands on that bike.

I've never done it, not even on my supermotard, even though the weight was under 100kg.

I have a good friend who is real small.. he's from vietnam and he's about 5' tall .. I'd guess his weight at less than 100 lbs. I started riding with him about 1994 and he rode a 250 ninja then. He's moved through a zx6R and bought a new 2003 (I think this is the year) Yamaha R1 which he still rides. He puts a lot of miles on his bikes (R1 has had the engine and tranny rebuilt) and he has used this method for as long as I've known him and doesn't have any kick stand issues. People who see him do it for the first time are amazed ... then they see that he can't touch the ground but with one foot while on the bike (his other thigh is on the seat) and you can really see them "thinking." My guess would be that most of you wouldn't have a snowball's chance in hell keeping pace with him on the track or up in the twisties, he's pretty quick and handles a bike well.

Even though he's a small guy, he does it much quicker and he shows much less effort pivoting that R1 than the guy in this video, who is much larger than Andy. I've done it a few times but only "just to do it" not really out of a need. At his size, pushing the bike around to reposition it is an effort.

I laugh just thinking about what would happen if that guys kick stand collapsed while he was doing that

Probably break a leg and throw out his back to name a few, not to mention what would happen to the bike!

I'd ask him if it was worth it when he could stand up again.

Nay for me.

First, as others have said, that's not what the kickstand's designed for.

Second, what about pavement conditions? The parking lot where I work has issues during the Summer. In some spots kickstands have sunk in causing the bike to tip over. You can imagine what would happen if somebody did that spin maneuver there!

I just saw someone do this to an r6 really quick in a parking lot. I didn't realize what he did at first. Is the kickstand on our ninjas strong enough to do this?

yep...i do it every now and then...i usually try back my bike into where ever i park it tho.....you do it too much, and like everything, i dont think it can be too good for the longevity...my friend has an R1 and after 2 years of doing that, it snapped..he got another kickstand, and continues to do it.

i've seen it done plenty of times. i've also seen kickstand stops break, pushing the kickstand forward more than its meant to go, dropping the bike. search youtube theres a few videos of people doing just this. my kickstand is a piece of **** so to rotate my bikes i just pick up one of the wheels at a time and slide it. much safer.

A friend of mine has an R1 that he's had for years... I'd guess 8-9. He does this on a regular basis. He's a small guy and the bike is heavy for him to turn around by pushing. He makes it look almost effortless.

Right so I've seen this done a couple of times, but never got the knack of leveraging the bike onto the kickstand & swinging it 180°.

Where do I need to grab? I don't want to drop it and I'm assuming it's a case of get both wheels off the ground & pivot it on the stand

My new place has a lane/tunnel between it & the neighbors, and a small backyard where the bike lives. Between the gravel, bbq & picnic table I can't turn the bike without doing an 8 point turn, but should have space to pivot it about the kickstand.
Reversing it isn't an option as there are a few steps up & down each way.

TLDNR:
where do I grip the bike to pivot it about the kickstand? & any tips for doing it without dropping the bike?

I don't have the strength but it's been done to my bike when I took it in for a service. Don't think it was so much putting the full weight on it as much as it was just using it as a prop.

i would trust the mount. the kickstand itself might bend a little if you had an extra 300 lbs on your bike when you did it. the kickstand is designed to hold the bike up. if it failed under the bikes full weight, it wouldn't be much of a kick stand.

I disagree. The kickstand is not designed to take the bike's full weight. It's designed to take the bike's weight + riders + gear + luggage weight while leaning over, which is still much less weight than 370 pounds being supported entirely by the stand.

I've had a number of people tell me it's fine and won't hurt anything... I was also told that you can pivot it around the front wheel when I was trying to fit my bike and car in the garage... problem is I don't have the strength to do it, I resorted to a 200-point turn

. I can pick my 250 up from the ground and that's about it.

Like it was said before, I've heard horror stories of stands sinking into pavement and taking out lines of bikes... for this reason I don't park next to anything without a puck on hot days.

having crashed on the kick stand mount, with and without the kickstand attached; i can attest to its strength and ability to withstand well over 370 lbs without bending. the kick stand itself might bend but i've done it plenty of times when i had a kickstand and none of my kickstands are bent.

Done it many times. Plus I am short so I hate doing the whole Austin Powers back up thing. Never dropped the bike on any occasion

I did it all the time on my D675. The easiest bike to do it one so far from my experiences have been 2007-2009 Honda CBR 600RRs. The kickstand on my D675 is made of aluminum and it never broke. The bolts for the kickstand mount are stamped 10.8 so the strength of these bolts are high.

If you want to make it easier (and not dig a divot into the pavement) put a piece of hard plastic under the kickstand (like a kickstand puck). That way you're not side loading the kickstand and it won't snap.

All bikes are different. Sportbikes you can do this because of the relatively balanced weight bias. Tried to do it on my Bonnieville...it's impossible. Did it on my dad's Sprint RS...doable but very hard because there is nothing to grab on to and the weight bias.

I would only do it if I was in a real bind.

My prefered method is to hold the front brake, get almost to the rev limiter and drop the clutch in second gear and the rear of the bike gains the ability to both support the bikes' weight, yet shift effortlessly in either direction given suitable support from the rider...

So, long answer short, nah.

Gonna have to say: It depends. Never had any issue doing it with my Superhawk. Concours 14? At something over 700 lbs wet with my modifications, I'd say no. The 250? Absolutely yes, except that the balance point is wrong and it's actually significantly more difficult than the Superhawk was to get up on the stand.

I park my bike on my back patio (closed in) so it doesn't get stolen and it's really hard to back it out because it's uphill going out the door. I won't lie, I've done it quite a few times, and physically it seems too easy to resist. However, I started thinking that it might not be the best for my kickstand, so I stopped doing it. It's hard, but I'll get through this

I was also told that you can pivot it around the front wheel when I was trying to fit my bike and car in the garage... problem is I don't have the strength to do it, I resorted to a 200-point turn . I can pick my 250 up from the ground and that's about it. Like it was said before, I've heard horror stories of stands sinking into pavement and taking out lines of bikes... for this reason I don't park next to anything without a puck on hot days.

Plus I am short so I hate doing the whole Austin Powers back up thing. Never dropped the bike on any occasion I did it all the time on my D675. The easiest bike to do it one so far from my experiences have been 2007-2009 Honda CBR 600RRs. The kickstand on my D675 is made of aluminum and it never broke. The bolts for the kickstand mount are stamped 10.8 so the strength of these bolts are high. If you want to make it easier (and not dig a divot into the pavement) put a piece of hard plastic under the kickstand (like a kickstand puck). That way you're not side loading the kickstand and it won't snap. All bikes are different. Sportbikes you can do this because of the relatively balanced weight bias. Tried to do it on my Bonnieville...it's impossible. My prefered method is to hold the front brake, get almost to the rev limiter and drop the clutch in second gear and the rear of the bike gains the ability to both support the bikes' weight, yet shift effortlessly in either direction given suitable support from the rider... So, long answer short, nah.

Never had any issue doing it with my Superhawk. Concours 14? At something over 700 lbs wet with my modifications, I'd say no. The 250? Absolutely yes, except that the balance point is wrong and it's actually significantly more difficult than the Superhawk was to get up on the stand.
