Dropped at low speed

So I was pulling out of the parking garage and there was a car parallel parking. Another car decided to pass the parking car. To avoid hitting the car I hit the brakes and since the wheel was turned it dropped on my leg. Ended up with a broken ankle which isnt the big issue. It will heal no surgery necessary just a boot. My gf is freaked out and wants me to get rid of the bike. How do I convince her otherwise? Thanks!

Buy some kickass boots (like I'm assuming you didn't before this happened) and say well, that won't happen again.

I'm assuming your girlfriend doesn't ride. I would suggest she sign up for the MSF course. Even if she decides she doesn't want to pursue her license, she'll at least have an insight into why you enjoy it so much. But, chances are she'll get bitten by the bug and want her own bike.

Also, look into a pair of proper, over-the-ankle boots that are designed for street riding. You bones will thank you for it.

Tell her it was a freak accident that's not likely to happen again but that you will wear your gear every time you ride just to be on the safe side.

Just reassure her that it happens to everybody. The bike just dropped. I could see her concerns if you would of crashed. Just make sure to wear proper boots when you start riding again. Just hope this fracture doesn't cause any chronic pain in the future.

I was wearing a pair of calf high leather boots. Not armored riding boots. I guess I'll look into getting a pair of those. Any recs?

Then, her concern is correct, you need more training for riding the street in a safe way.

The sudden application of front brake while turning was a common new rider error and can be dangerous in the wrong conditions.

Take a look at this:

http://www.ninjette.org/forums/showthread.php?t=114555

http://www.ninjette.org/forums/showthread.php?t=114372

Don't feel bad, we all have been at the skill point you are now; it is just a matter of riding slower and more carefully until your mileage increases.

As frequently as possible during this summer, experiment and practice in a safe environment (empty parking lot) until you become more intimate with the brakes and the bike in awkward situations.

Tell her that you can only become a better rider with disciplined practice and get well soon !!!
