look into smooth trailbraking, you brake later with more control and less panic

@Floki

Kinda what Sirref said... but don't start with trailbraking, let that come after this.

If your next track day is at Jennings, then turns 3, 7, 13 and 1 are good for this. Plenty of good spots to work on it, but yep... before you go into a corner trailing to finalize entry speed, lets keep you on the track . If you're not 100% sure you go it, don't do it.

^^^ lol, I still find it funny how that awesome thread came right after my little mishap. I'm the perfect example of someone who knows just enough to get into trouble. I basically said to myself, "if he can brake late, I can do it. LETS GOOOOO! Oh look, I messed that up a little, now I'm off line into this next turn, igotthisigotthisigotthis leeaaaaannn! aaaaaaaaaaaaannndd there goes the front, I don't got this."

Right Chris....

It's a sobering reminder that even the best of us can find ourselves in error from time to time. NOBODY is immune. Just as you learned from me, I learned from you and got better.

I also chose those turns at Jennings based on runoff avail as noted by Sirref. While 3 is not the best of runoff, you aint gunna hit anything either.

to me braking / trailbraking is the first thing anyone should work on as it's huge part of bike control but i won't get into that..

what i'll say though, lap times come from hitting all your apexes and exiting fast first. time you'll drop by getting great exits to straights on a track are wayyy larger than a few 10ths here and there on harder braking or later braking.

Your qualifying time is based off a clean lap (hopefully).

Come the green flag, one can just hope to plain outride one's competitor. Other times, you competitor is right on your arse, or ahead of you and the only easy clean pass is on the brakes. Race 50+ races and comment again. Bottom line is, they have to make a mistake or you pass em on the brakes. So goes....

pretty sure sarge said ninjette track junkies aren't allowed to crash

also the best places to work on braking at jennings are definitely those turns, on a 250 turn 3 isn't that much on the brakes though

Reason I don't wanna get into it was cause I mentioned my reasons before and it became a chicken/egg argument with no real conclusion.

Simply put, I believe trailbraking can save lives on the street and minimize your neutral throttle at the track. I could care less if we're talking track only. People can do whatever they believe is fast. I'll just stick to what I know. But in real life, I become more passionate about this when people dismiss trailbraking or make it less of a priority.

Reason behind most people putting aside trailbraking and sticking to "get your braking done on the straight" is understandable. Trailbraking is not an easy craft. Too much of it can bite you (ask me how i know). So people think it's best to get done with your braking on a straight. Cool. But this assumes that rider never misjudges a corner. Which is a complete bs. Go watch riders in any canyon. I bet you there's quite a few who go in a corner too hot and they can't slow down mid corner and end up going over the lines. What if there's a truck coming??? Are you gonna tell him "oh you should've gotten your braking done before the corner". Too late for that! If you don't trailbrake to adjust your speed in that situation, what do you do? Dump it and hope the truck doesn't run over you? Pick it up and run off and hope you're not running straight into a mountain or a 50 feet drop? Who do you think has more chance of making that corner? One who has practiced trailbraking from day 1 or one that panics and hopes he's not squeezing the lever too hard?

Ahh I see, it's just been my experience (on track) to not jump into very aggressive braking right off the bat. I don't follow any certain camp, to brake straight up, or trail off. I don't really care as long as you hit your entry speeds, hold your lines, markers and you keep it shiny side up.

Imho, Floki has made amazing progress in just 3 track days. Maybe even a little too much progress too fast, if you know what I mean. At the speeds he is riding, stuff goes wrong really fast. I think he made the right call too. If he is gunna go that fast, then he better well learn to shut it down fast. And since we don't slow from 145 to 65 mid corner, maybe we should start with the very hard braking while straight up. Then we can move to shaving off that last 15 or so (to start) while trailing. He seems to have great control and I think it will come to him with a lil bit of practice to find the bikes abilities as well as his own.

I don't blame the tires whatsoever.
Dumb ass rider oversteered leaned over into a heavy patch of Florida dirt/sand. The bike started going down but the rear caught traction again and bucked me off pretty fast.

Never blame the bike. Or the tires. BT-45s have gotten me through many, many successful track days. They're dual compound tires with a hard center but pretty sticky edges. They're perfect for those of us who mostly use our bike for street riding and rarely push speeds on the track. No tires would have pulled me out of that egregious mishap.

Looking over my glasses is not an option for me... I'm utterly blind (correction of +6.50/+7.00).

I have a geeky solution for it, which works very well.

Take a Breathe-Right strip. Fold it in half so that it makes a peak. Stick it high up on the bridge of your nose and perch your glasses on top.

You look even dorkier than usual when you're not wearing your helmet but it is 100 percent effective.

This year I'm going to get some contacts solely for riding use... I prefer glasses most of the time and I also wear progressive lenses.
