Ninja 250r Won't Start

Hello, I would appreciate any help anyone has to offer. I am buying a 2011 Ninja 250 and i cannot get it to start. I tried starting it and nothing happens. No lights nothing battery is completely dead. I then tried jumping it with my car and the lights came on, the only light that did not come on is the head light. I then tried starting it and it clicked once then completely died. The lights would not come on any more and would not do anything. The owner said the bike has been sitting for about a year. Also it was in neutral when i tried starting it. The bike has less then a 1000 miles on it. Please help and thank you!

Welcome Dakota!

Solve the battery problem first, try to charge the existing one or get a new one if you have to. While the new battery is charging, lets do some detective work. If you jump started the bike with the car running (should be non running)... You could have damaged the wiring, but most likely you popped the main fuse 30amp.

As Chris noted - get a good battery first. Chances are you will need to buy a new one, but make sure it's fully charged (reading 12.7V or above) before you install it. Also check the main fuse, and battery cable connections, if you aren't getting power after instally a fully-charged battery.

Other things that will most likely need attention are any gas in the tank and floatbowls (drain completely), and a precise carb cleaning if the floatbowls were not drained.

Ninja won't Start

The car was not running, any other ideas of what it could be and do you think its an easy fix cause I have not bought the bike yet so I don't want to invest on battery since i don't own the bike yet. But I also don't want to buy the bike if i cannot fix it.

Sounds like battery connections or fuse. Just have them put the battery on the trickle charger (2amp setting) overnight and try again tomorrow or have the seller buy the battery or take it off the purchase price. If it don't work, keep the battery. No sense messing with the carbs until the bike turns over and you have some amount of lights. N light on? Check dat fuse!

Unless your getting an amazing deal, move on to the next bike. Plenty of fish in the sea. :P

Yes, it's worth the trouble as long as it's not all beat up and it will run. What is reason the seller gives for letting it go so cheap?

He's an old friend/Ex-coworker and I asked him if he had any friends who were selling bikes and he told me about his. He said he road it twice and went to ride it a third time and it would not start. So he just never fixed it and now he has no use for it. He says he does not want to continue riding any more. Everything on it looks new other then the blinker is cracked, all the fairings are scratch less from what i saw.

Ask him to pay for the battery and you'll install it.

If it runs, and is in as good of shape as you think, it would be a super deal.

Really, if you feel he is truthful about not having any major issues (like running it out of oil, etc), and you can gamble a bit, it would still be worth buying at that price not-running. Old fuel and plugged carb jets are the most likely problems you would run into from sitting without being properly prepped.

I'd buy it not-running for that price.

The list of things that would cause it not to run is long, but simple problems to fix, with the exception of major engine issues.

I'd say buy it, I've had worse.

Ok, thanks for all the help guys I just have one last concern is there any way to tell if the motor/transmission is locked up or broken. And would it be likely with such few miles it has on it?

If it turns over odds are it okay, mileage means nothing.
