Good to see some of the old basic methods of removing frozen screws are being used...
these new guys would have tried to weld a nut to it ! HAHAHHAH
done right the easy out is by far the easiest method but it does require a straight hole...
and being a pilot jet the hole was already there you just had to enlarge it a bit...so the easy out would fit and start....
.... I've broken all of my small easyouts over the last 50 years so I would have to buy a complete set if I ran into that problem..... or just send it to you LOL
...
Bob.....

happened on the pilot adjust screw, not the pilot jet. Frozen solid, started with a tiny hole, increased bit size till I achieved proper size listed on the #2 EZ out,
still a tricky removal process.

the VTX1300 carb is completed, with the exception of a new bowl "gasket" which i await delivery on.

Complicated Keihin single carb designed with both an accelerator pump and a decel valve. I've disassembled both and cleaned all their passageways along with the same old pilot, main circuits (which were previously clogged solid)

These should be fine runners once reinstalled.

been busy preparing my #113 EX500 carbset (my property based on trade-ins)

Actually removed a tiny pilot screw tip, broken off and solidly blocking its port. I'll post a pic when I can. These are a tough refurb, the pilot jet port on the other carb is solidly blocked, currently in ultrasonic, hopefully will clear it.

And, in the meantime, the electric motor has overheated/seized on my 12-15 year old shop vac. As its NLA to buy/replace as new...had no choice but to buy a new shop vac this morning, an integral supporting device used within my services.

What is it with shop vac's ? I've gone through 4 of them in my time so far
my latest is a Haart 3.5 gal for cleaning my pellet stove, so far so good
but all the rest the bearings in the motors went out.... it's like they were ALL put together with no grease on the bearings !
I am tempted to pull the one I have apart right now and grease it real good !
they all worked great for a short period of time...then promptly died as the bearing would ware out and allow the motor to wobble
once they start going into that wobble mode they can't get the RPM and are useless.......
I suggest you pull your brand new Shop vac apart and lube the bearings !
they should be tiny ball bearings but even those need lubed !
....
Bob..

on my shop vac the motors' commutator windings were badly burnt.

Carbset #113 (though for EX500) will be released tomorrow, I believe.
Perfectly passed a wet test this afternoon, levels right on the money, no leaks internal or external.

Edited to add: totally finished #113 today, currently listed FS on the EX-500 website.

done, back in the mail already. Findings included swapped jet needles (as they are '09 L/R placement is critical), totally clogged mains/pilots and also 1 choke circuit clogged solid. All cleared/corrected now, should be bolt-on runners. I'll await owners report.

Currently have a pair of Stromberg carbs off of a 1947 American LaFrance brand firetruck which uses a 12 cylinder engine. Work commencing in my inside cellar/shop (brutally cold outside)

After extensive research, 2 carb/gasket kits ordered today at $67 each, some disassembly reveals carbs using 3 sections. Different fo' sure....pic on right side is 1 partially disassembled carb.

this carbset, recently refurbed has been accused of leakage....I can't replicate/duplicate ANY leakage whatsoever....I've contacted the owner. Currently on a protracted, very long "wet test", a pic'll follow.

thats odd usually all you have to do to get them to leak again is just put gas in them when they leak.... maybe their being used at a funny angle
like the bike is on a rear wheel stand and it's ass is real high in the air...
or maybe it is the front wheel being held too high.
....
that's a real pickle buddy can't have leaking carbs but if you can't get them to leak again just double check the float level and send them back !
.....
Bob.......

currently on a set of EX500 carbs. Found 1 clogged pilot jet, dirty float valve seats, worn valves. Owner reports fuel in oil. Also 2 oversized Mikuni main jets installed in Keihin carbs!

Lets see how it goes, more tomorrow.

makes you wonder how it even ran with oversized mains in it and the other problems !
been my experience that even one step over on the mains makes them so boggy you have to take them back out just to be rideable.... LOL

a comparative chart reveals 130 Mikuni jets are equal to 150 Keihins. Stock Keihin supplied was, in fact 130. WAY oversized!

The float valves were adjusted to provide a lower fuel level...I wonder why?

All will be corrected, I'm anxious to hear how it runs/responds after corrections.

yes you might add a word of caution when he first throttles up he might kill himself ! LOL ..... it's strange how forgiving a I.C. engine can be at times,
it may not run good but it still runs.... getting it to run RIGHT is always a major triumph !!!!!

Findings so far:

170 main jets? Seriously way oversized .....especially with jet kit needles set on position #5. Way too much fuel being sucked through these carbs (as owner has confirmed)

1 partially occluded pilot jet, though (thankfully) stock size #40

Thats all for now.

that's what you get when the guy tries to HOP-UP the machine and make it FASTER.... and doesn't know anything about the running of an engine !
the when in doubt add more fuel syndrome ! and it does not work that way!
..... I bet when he gets the bike running again he won't believe how good it runs !!!!!
..... a little knowledge is a dangerous thing !
....

agreed Bk. The owner newly aquired the bike....it had jet kit, exhaust, removed air box cover.....he's now returning it back to stock. I have since supplied stock sized 140 main jets and stock needles.....should be perfect with stock components yet again.

Wow those were really big jets in there then..... man I'm surprised it ran at all !
140 stock to 170 WOW ..... that is really unbelievable !
at most from 140 maybe as high as 150.... with engine work as high as 160 but 170?
it's like Blink, Blink UH ?
I bet you were surprised to see them in there....... never a dull moment eh ? LOL
....
when I was porting and polishing 2 strokes, I would usually have to go 2 sizes up to get a chocolate burn but that is 2 strokes !
so that's like 150 to 155 to 160 because the way they numbered the jets on 250cc bikes back then.... now days you can get single digit increments.... the old mikuni carbs back then jets were real hard to come by.... I had to on many occasion drill them out by hand with indexed drill bits.... twas easy though...ya find the drill bit that fit it perfectly and just drill it out with the next size bigger
.... but you had to be sure to file off the numbers for the next guy or he would have a hard time figuring out why it was running strange ! LOL

Bob....
