Should I buy this Ninja 250 (Seems like an amazing deal)

My friend that rides to school is selling his Ninja 250. It is a 2008 with 3.5k miles, a yoshimura exhaust, and frame sliders. It has only been downed once while his friend was holding it, but there is no damage to the bike because of the sliders. He is selling it for only 2.5k which, living in California at least, is a STEAL for a new gen 250. What do you guys think though? The oil was changed 1k miles ago and I am pretty sure he has done regular maintenance on it.

Sounds like a nice deal but not sure how how you can expect us to give any real value based on some text on the screen. It has all the positives though, price, history and you know the owner.

I know what you mean. I have seen it in person though and feel like it is a good deal. Just wanted some advice from people who actually know what they are doing. This would be my first.

That would be a good price almost anywhere, assuming there are no hidden defects.

None at all. Bike is completely clean. I saw a 2007 pregen on craigslist for $2700 today so that basically answered my question haha.

The best deal on a bike is when you ride away not having any regrets about it. If you feel good about the deal and afterwards, then it was worth it.

Yes, sub-$3k in California is a good price for a new-gen.

Here is the only issue. I just turned 18 on the 21st. My parents aren't so hot about me getting a motorcycle. I even made a PowerPoint and wrote a 7 page essay. I've been passionate about them for years and might even order proficient motorcycling. I told them about this bike and they basically said no, even of I were just going to buy it and resell it for a great profit. However, would it be bad if I bought the bike on Friday. They will be out of town that weekend and leave very early Friday.

Not the smartest move. Going behind your parents back is bound to cause trouble.

Save your cash. Do whatever it is you're going to do after high school. If that means going out on your own, your parents have no real say. If that involves college, listen to your parents.

I was like you were. I didn't get a bike till 28. They made the right decision holding me back for sure.

I was told no bike by my parents... I waited, did 6 years in the army, I'm on my own last time i was back home my pops smiled and "said nice bike, be careful as ya can"
Nothing good comes from dissing your parents in their house

I know I should probably wait. But this deal will never happen again. 3.5k miles, yoshimura exhaust, frame sliders. And it's a 2008... I told my parents it's a deal of a lifetime but they won't listen. It would be perfect for me to just get for the summer and then sell before school starts. I'm taking the MSF course on July 19 but my parents think I won't get a bike after. But I even told my mom she should come watch me at MSF.

Sounds like your parents are steadfast in their view on bikes and I wouldn't buy one behind their back. It's up to you, though. There will always be more bikes out there (maybe not at this kind of a deal).

other similar deals will turn up. don't get fixated on one bike.

this world is all about who you know, and who likes you. don't start burning bridges now, with your parents nonetheless. riding a motorcycle isn't worth it.

I didn't get my bike until I was 32, wanted one when I was younger, but now I see that if I had, I would not have made it to my 32nd birthday. even before 27ish I probably would have gotten myself into trouble...or worse. Most of the videos of the dumb shits going down the freeway doing wheelies at 80mph + are 25 or younger. I was the same way, no fear of life or death and would do stupid **** to impress others. wasn't until I got older and had family that I realized how lucky I am to still be alive with some of the **** I did, and all of that was without being on a hunk of metal with two wheels that can do 150.

I'm 18 and got my bike as a Christmas present from my parents, but that's probably because they knew they had been giving me a lot of undeserving **** the past year and a half, and because they knew the second I went off to college I'd buy one anyway.

Tell them you want it because it's the responsible thing to do. Parents love responsibility.

If you still live with your parents I would advise against disrespecting them like that. I don't know the relationship you have with your parents, but if I had pulled a stunt like that when I lived at home I would have risked getting kicked out.

I wouldn't do it...everything my parents ever said no & i went against their wishes or advice always seemed to bite me in the ass.
Now,as a parent i can appreciate where they were coming from & still do.
Doing something with their approval will be so much more enjoyable.
All my "deals of a lifetime"turned into nightmares & money pits with better deals coming up soon after.
Parents are not trying to knock us down, just trying to teach us from their experience & mistakes.
Good luck.

This isn't really a fair argument, my dad got the Ninjette for himself when i was 14, and i've been riding since then (track, of course).
I started riding street when i turned 16, six months ago, and the one accident i had in 15,000 km was me getting hit by a scooter.

To the OP- try harder to convince the parents, if that doesn't work, then drop the idea for a while

You were probably way more responsible than me though. I did some stupid **** as a kid (i.e. jumping from roof to roof down my street). If this kid is responsible and aware of the dangers he should be fine. I still have a need for adrenaline and that is one of the reasons that I went with a bike that can't do much more than 100mph. statistics show that 30% of crashes involve just the motorcycle, no cars involved. They also show that riders under 40 have twice the chance of being killed in an accident, but even after 40 your chances are still 20 times that being killed in a car. seems like common sense since your not in a cage, but still crappy to see the numbers.

The one thing my parents told me no to when I was younger was when I had a chance to buy a completely restored 1972 corvette stingray 454 for $9000. Really wish to this day that I had not listened to them. That was a once in a lifetime deal I came across.

I toyed around with the idea and pitched it to my parents when I was 18. They hated it and I didn't get the ninja 250 until I had a full time job 7 years later. They hate me riding NOW, I can't imagine what would have happened if they had seen it in the driveway all of a sudden at age 18.

Dude, it's a 250. This is not the deal of a lifetime; there's millions of 250's. If it was a Desmosedici, I'd go for it. However, since this is not a super duper Duc, it's not worth ruining your relationship with your parents.

Yeah I might just buy it to resell. Buying it at $2.5k with a yoshimura exhaust, fender eliminator, and frame sliders. No physical or mechanical damage. Oil changed 1k miles ago. Tires have 50% tread left. How much would I be able to resell it for? Here in California, ninjas with more miles and and stock exhaust.

Okay well I got the confirmation from them for me to buy it and flip it for higher money. Does anyone know how much I would be able to sell it for? Because its worth more than 2.5k for sure.

You could maybe get 3K for it. DO NOT RIDE IT.

Whether you agree with your parents or not in these kind of matters while you're under their roof and they support you financially you should respect their wishes.

Honestly, I don't think the potential profit will be worth your time and effort.

You're definitely going to be tempted to ride it, which your parents already seem to be against.

Terrible idea. You might make 200 profit at most, at worst you might be stuck with a bike for a while until you finally decide to settle for a loss(most likely), all the while you're pissing off your parents for being insubordinate. Bikes don't often sell for their asking price, so don't be fooled by the high asking prices on Craigslist.

Aftermarket parts do not, I repeat DO NOT add to the price of a used vehicle.

Pass on this one. There are much better ways to make money than buying unknown used motorcycles and trying to flip them.

Edit... don't forget the added cost of paying to register the bike, insure it in case it gets stolen, get a title in your name once you purchase it, because surely the owner doesn't want to deal with that crap.

MOVE ON

$200 seems pretty low of a profit. The bike is already registered. I won't need insurance because it will be sitting in my garage waiting to be sold. And to transfer a title in California, you only have to pay $17. And it's not an "unknown" vehicle. I know the owner.

You're not actually thinking you can sell a 5 year old, previous generation bike that was 5k when it was brand new for more than 3k, do you? I think you might be able to squeeze 3k out of it if you're really patient. Again, expect that bikes on Craigslist sell for 500 lower than asking.

Its registered to another owner. You need to register it to yourself, unless the original owner is accepting the risks of having it continually registered in his name,

You have to pay tax on used vehicle sales to register it in your name.

You have to transfer title, and wait probably 4 weeks for the new title to show up.

Then you have to store a commonly stolen object without insurance.

Then you have to deal with sketchy Craigslist people showing up to your house, since you can't ride to meet in a public place.

Lots of risk for little gain.

Again... MOVE ON.

Better yet... buy the bike, and learn a life lesson.
