Greetings from overseas

Hey ladies and gents,
I stumbled across this site while looking for some more reasons to purchase a 250 and have found it to be a valuable source. Having just put the first ride of the season behind me I’m pretty motivated, but it just started snowing again…so I guess the forum is as close as I can get to riding.

Putting that aside, here’s a quick riding history:
Ever since I can remember everybody on my dad’s side of the family has been riding dirt bikes, while I’ve only been able to sit on a motorcycle every 2-4 years when we visited state side. So now at 21 I finally got enough cash together to afford license, gear and a bike. In fall I managed to complete my German license as well the advanced MSF and have put 325 miles on my 250 since (so still very new to riding).

Right now I’m waiting to put more miles under my belt, either by commuting or hitting some twisties on the weekends; while looking for inexpensive ways to make my Ninja a bit more individualistic.

Will add pic’s of my (still completely stock) ninja as soon as the weather allows…

Kaiserslautern! You should get a lot of nice rides in that area once spring sets in. I worked around there for several years. Unfortunately, I was never there "permanently" or I would have had a motorcycle to enjoy it even more.

Thanks for the warm welcome!

Definitely looking forward to some enjoyable rides in spring, though I got to ask a question concerning group rides. A friend (experienced rider with a Honda CBF 600) is all about showing me some great routes in the area, but he mentioned I should take the lead since that way he wouldn’t just lose me. However, I’d prefer following him instead as his line should be a lot cleaner and more effective. Plus I think matching his corner entrance speed and copying his lines could help me improve. What’s the general consensus?

Your friend sounds like a good ride partner. You don't want to put pressure on anyone to match speeds beyond ability, and you don't want the guy in front having to check back to see if folks are still there. Trying to get the same corner speeds as an experienced 600 rider when you are on your ninjette sounds like a bad idea. Having an experienced rider in back watching out for you could be a better way to get some useful feedback.

I've checked a couple of clubs that do regular group rides and they all have pretty much the same rule "New riders should be positioned as close to the front as possible."

I agree with Floyd. The other good thing is that they can watch you and hopefully give some constructive criticism when you stop for breaks. One danger about having the new guy lead is familiarity with the road. Depending on how challenging the road is, it'd be a good idea for the experienced guy to lead on a "cruise" through the route so that the "trouble spots" are identified.

Glad I asked

All the stuff brought up makes sense and I guess I was a little over eager to give chase. So the best solution would be to have me lead at my pace and have him signal or take the lead before known trouble spots arise?
