Gas tank whine or not...at WOT

Now I have read every post there is on the gas tank whinning noise. It has gotten worse, almost like a kettle boiling. It gets really bad when I ride the bike hard, ease off the throttle a bit and there it is, whinning and whistling.

So last night on the way home I put my spare key in the tank, and when it started to whine, I popped open the gas cap. The sound did dissipate and eventually go away. Now with the gas cap open I decided to let er rip, and the whinning and whistling was there again...how can this be? Could this in fact be another problem ? I do not know, and I dont want to do the gas cap mod as I feel in may be in vain, as the sound is still there when the gas cap is open.

What is your advice folks.....I eagerely await your feedback.

And if you don't want to take the tube off try cutting it so it's shorter that might help.

You sure it's the gas tank? Check everything air related with the bike up on stands and your helmet off.

Still have snorkle?

Still have the snorkle, no mods done to the engine or intake.

Yea, but that don't mean the problem is not there. Check airbox/filter, snorkle (this is my guess), and carb boots. You know the easiest thing to do to eliminate the gas tank as a source of the problem is to run it a short distance in a straight line with the tank open.

Well that pretty much takes the tank off the list. Next big question is does it happen only while moving or not?

Those would be the next areas I would be checking followed by vacuum lines/fittings.

I have not had chance to dig into any suspect areas yet...but I did notice one thing this morning, I was noticeable as soon as I pulled away this morning, then it went away.....

But I noticed my speedo was not working..it has up until this morning. I am wondering if the cable was binding in the houseing console. Will investigate further. I did have the rubbing at the wheel but fixed that months ago, could it be the speedo connector in the console making all that noise.

Chances are that if your speedo is now not working, what you were hearing was speedo cable squeal. Sometimes it helps to post a video of the sound. Everybody describes sounds differently, however many are distinguishable, especially the sound difference between speedo cable squeal and tank whine/whistle.

If your bike speed sounded anything like the speedo in this video, it was probably your speedo cable and your cable shaft may now be broken.

Well that appears to be the problem. Rode home for 30 miles and not a whine, whimper or murmur. Only problem is no idea how fast how was going...off to the dealer as it is still under warranty.
