Ran out of gas

Well it was a long night last night I ran out of gas. I also did not have a fuel filter on the bike as the last one I had toss in to a garbage can on my way out to the part store and they did not have one so I did not put a new one on. Well I sucked something up and clogged one of the jets so I was not able to do over 20. So I pull over and went to clean the carbs on the side of the road.

1. To clean carbs all you need to undo is the 2 faring bolts on each side holding the gas tank you do not need to remove all the faring's.

2. Change out all the bolts you can at home to a hex head it will make taking it apart so much faster.

3. If you have not done it yet do the air box mod.

Well 2h later the bike is back running but the issue now is the rpm will hang when I let off the gas. Is this just a issue with the idle/fuel mix? I know I need to re sync carbs later on today as it searches for a rpm a little but the valves are good I last did them 2k miles ago.

Do you not have the micro screens on the petcock or the inline filter on the carb? Your jets may not have been clogged.

It is also possible for the the bike to slow down while riding on a flat surface if the fuel is too low. The carbs tend not to fill up as fast. I had it happen before. Any amount of throttle more than 1/4, resulted in a non response. The fuel system is a gravity feed system. It requires the weight if the fuel itself to feed the carbs. As the fuel becomes less, the flow can slow.

No I removed the in line one along time ago and replaced it with one for a lawn mower. It was clogged once I got them apart I was not able to see through it. It also happened after I got a full tank of gas and was riding for a few min. Did not know it has screens on the petcock never looked.

No Gas?

It must suck to be this ignorant. Pitched a "working" filter to opt for no filter.
And then on top of that, you have been putting substandard fuel in the tank.
My Galfer brakes work just fine, Thank You. Don't know how I got dragged into your B/S!

(I believe someone has just become aware of the [ you ] tag).

Folks - our T.O.S. is in my sig and linked at the bottom of every page. I think it's self-evident, but if anyone feels the need to review, please do. No more warnings in this thread.

where did the "you" tag come into play? I always carry a gal of gas in my backpack for just this occasion.

Experience

I came to this site to learn more about my choice of motorcycle.
This is my first street bike. I have ridden dirt for years in my younger days.
I have experienced some valid points from members, and some that are not valid in any world.

There is a tag on this forum that automatically inserts your username when you view it. It's not actually directed at you. Something to keep in mind for future reference.

It's ok, @harvey58, the [ you ] tag gets lots of people. Nothing to be embarrassed about.

@fishdip, I'd suggest keeping extra fuel in your tailbag/backpack. It helps for these kinds of situations.

My earlier post has disappeared !!!

One or both of the rubber boots downstream the carbs are letting air leak into the vacuum created by the engine when the butterfly valves are closed at idle, making the mix lean, the combustion hotter and the idle faster.

lol calm down killer. the filter was not flowing when I had (pitched it). Also fyi it takes only a few specks of dirt to clog the jet. easy for it to get in to any gas.
as far as my sig goes it dose not matter how good your brakes are if you don't have time to react or the ground is wet or the million other issues that can happen in a sec then you may be going faster then your brakes can be applied.
and its directed at every one even me. we have a time and place to go fast and its called the track.
