PSA - Check your master links
This is not what you want to see after a track day. I got to wonder how long the clip was gone because it has held well for months and 7 or so track days. Guess it's safety wire time.

Better yet, my next chain will NOT have the clip style master link.

You are so lucky, Chris !!
O-ring chains have to have safety wire in the clip, or they will spit it out every time. The red color indicates that lubrication has failed for that link.

As picky as I am about other stuff, I let something like this go unchecked.... I do feel very lucky and should have known better.

Scary... was that on your 250 I'm assuming? I'm guessing that the OEM chain is a master link type.

I thought the OEM chain was the continous type. As in you would have to remove the swing arm to remove/replace without breaking one of the links.

One thing I did was clean the area really nicely and tack on a bit of JB weld to the link. It really held it on there. I did have to break the chain to remove it due to wear, but that was the only reason I'd ever remove it anyway.

hernan knows whats up as usual. track bikes for me deserve clips instead of rivets (****ing hate rivets and their complete lack of any real ability to properly torque). and any clip deserves to be safetywired shut. i should take a photo of my rear end, there's so many safetywired things... it looks like a damn airplane.

I use small 1/8" plastic zip ties instead of safety wire. They are easier to remove, and if you use a yellow one, you can always do a quick check to make sure its still there.

Here you go....
Last year I didn't put anything on the clip, and came back from a 400 mile trip with not only the clip missing, but also the side plate. How it didn't come off I don't know. So used a zip tie, and never had a problem since. |

I kinda wonder how a plastic zip tie can be more resistant to coming loose than a metal clip.

And what holds the zip-tie losed? They have a little plastic flap in the rachetting setup that holds with tension just like the clip. When snipped, it only takes a few slips before it's loose. They can also stretch or melt to lose their position.

The chain will get warm, but not hot enough to melt the zip-tie. Also, the zip-tie doesn't have any tension on it at all. It's sole purpose is just to keep the metal clip closed, not provide any structural integrity to the chain.

It's interesting what others prefer and I find the zip tie even more fascinating. Will that get you through race tech?

I put the new chain on my bike two weeks ago and put on a plastice ziptie... it disappeared in about 400miles... sounds like time for a bigger ziptie or safety wire....

Well I lost the clip on this weekend's ride. I tested out the zip tie and nope. It went missing along with the clip. I used a paper clip to get me back home so I can get a riveted master link.
