On my way to work my bike died!!!!!!

My bike died twice.... I was riding and I couldn't get it to go over 80 then the bike jsut started slowing down and died, after about 5 min of trying to start it, it started up and i got about 2 miles then it died again and wouldnt start... I walked it a mile trying to start it the whole time, put the choke on and the bike started up and i drove it to work with the choke only 5 min late.... Fuel filter issues or carb?

The simplest things to try are disconnecting the hose from the carb nipple and using a container, check is gas flows in normal and reserve positions (applying vacuum to the valve).

If so, then check the vacuum hose to the petcock.

Normally carbs problems don't appear so suddenly.

No Idea how to do any of this.

No need to ride with the gas lid open. Just open it, release vacuum, shut it and restart & ride off.

I am trying to track down the cause of this.
When as the last time you had your gas tank cap open?
When was the last time you heard your bike make the "gas tank whine" noise?

I opened my gas tank 10 min before i left to check how much gas i had then i opened it when it shut down the first time to see how much gas was left, however i did not open the seciond time cause i knew i had enough gas....

Temp was 80 degree, humidity is mid because we're right next to the water but it hasn't rained in 4 days.

it sounds like an intermittent vacuum leak. look for cracks in all the hoses connected to the gas tank and the carbs.

if your bike dies in the rain, this is also a big clue that you have a cracked vacuum hose (took me a good 6 months to figure that out)

It honestly seems like the bike isn't getting gas, everyone here tells me to change the fuel filter cause it hasn't been changed since the bike was new, the bike only has 2400 miles on it and it's an 03.

there are rubber hoses that connect the carbs together and connect the carbs to the gas tank. check those.

if its not that, maybe its a broken float valve.

I've only been riding since 03, honestly have no clue where the carbs even are...

no. the bike runs low compression and takes regular (87 octane) gas

Just died..

Open cap, flash light, look as deep as possible, Any dirt along
bottom, new filter minimum. Drain float bowl into wad of paper
towels, lookin for sediment , dirt. Be sure to have 'square'
fitment of screw driver into drain screw.
EASY WAY TO CHECK FOR VAC LEAK, engine running, lightly
.5 sec spray WD-40 on rubber boots between carbs & cylinder
head, & airbox boots. ... If RPM 's rise , suckin richer mixture
there is a leak drawing in more combustable source than air.
When opening the choke on a warm eng. = Dirty main jets/
Carb. Worse case , get running, clear area , 3rd gear, 3,000
+ rpm Wide open throttle, then rotate choke open/full.
More than likely it will stumble, then take off. There's a slight
chance this will pull dirt thru, but don't hold your breath.
Buy a service manual, & read it. Clymer , Chilton, factory
Manuals don't have as descriptive instructions as the others.
You should have more tools than what under the seat, but
those tool would be good start to duplicate.

Sorry for the delayed response.

Can you leave it at work?

Just follow the hose from the bottom of the petcock.

It connects to a plastic nipple on the left side of the carburetors.

Using some pliers, open and slide back the metal clip.

Without braking the plastic nipple, jiggle the hose and try to disconnect it.

There is a very little mesh filter entering that nipple, which can be removed and blown with your mouth.

Next, connect some long hose to that open end of the hose, open the gas cap and the petcock and blow into that open end of the hose from a position above the tank (so gas doesn't flow back into your mouth).

Repeat that for the reserve position.

Put everything back and try to start the bike.

Wow, thanks, very detailed and I can do that I know exactly where your talking about. I called a mechanic and he said because the bike ran with the choke on it's getting more fuel and because of that it sounds like the carbs need cleaned... 2 cylindar 350.00
