Attitudes about "sponsor" stickers
kayso...
We all know that whenever you buy something these days, the manufacturer sends you stickers. A lot of race/track bikes are festooned with these things. I know that sometimes there's money (contingency/sponsorship) involved, but I suspect that a lot of people put them on because they like the look. I'm not a racer and don't have a track bike (yet), but as far as I'm concerned I'm happy to advertise a product on my personal property only if there's some compensation. Giving me a cool sticker to slap on my fairing is not compensation. Pay me, give me free product, then okay. How do you feel about it?

If I particularly enjoy a product or like using it and it works well I have no problem sticking it on my bike if it doesn't look tacky. I wouldn't really have used them on my street bike but once I had a race bike I felt it more fitting to have stickers on board and I tried to keep them looking decent.
I think if I started getting paid to have stickers (perchance...to dream) then I would be more picky about which ones were paying me to be on my bike but since I'm a nobody, who cares!?

Expecting some kind of compensation from a company when they have no assurances that you will indeed be advertising for them is not reasonable. That is, how can the company ensure that every person who promises to advertise a product will actually follow through, and how would they enforce it?

They're great for covering up cracks, scratches, and dents. If you run out of zip ties and duct tape, you could even use stickers possibly.

I put stickers on if i either like the product or like the company. (And if their sticker isn't too gaudy.). i have no problem "advertising" cause i look at it like if a friend asked "What brand of X do you use?"
Course I won't put EVERY sticker on, but eh...

I hate to pay to advertise for somebody, most of the brands I buy aren't you're typical $50 "designer" shirts with vulgar logo's and brands festooned across them. A $500 cashmere sweater with a label of the collar is far classier than a $150 cashmere sweater with a three inch sewn on logo of a man playing polo.
I even took the ninja stickers off my side fairings. I find branding vulgar and tasteless. However, I was so impressed with my scottoiler I put a transparent and grey sticker on my chains mud guard simply because. I couldn't recomend it enough. I don't think I could say the same about renthal bars or monster energy. |

However, if you good at marketing yourself you'll be surprised what you can obtain even if it's not a "racer" sponsorship. And I speak from experience.

On the other hand, I might put stickers that had NOTHING to do with motorcycles on there just to mess with people.
Especially fictitious ones. Logos from places like: Weyland-Yutani (the "company" from Alien) Yoyodyne Propulsion Systems (Buckaroo Banzai) Tyrell Corporation (Blade Runner) Cyberdyne Systems (Terminator) Sirius Cybernetics (HHGTG) Soylent Corp. (Soylent Green) CHOAM (Dune) In the OP I was also thinking of bikes (and cars) I've seen with sticker packages that have absolutely nothing to do with the bike they're on. Like both Pirelli AND Michelin stickers. Ohlins and Penske stickers on bikes with stock suspsension. Ducati stickers on a Kawasaki. Stuff like that...

I put all of the stickers in my shed where I store my bike and on tool boxes. I don't like to put stickers on my bike, I like the "clean" look.
If I had a track bike, especially with scratched or cracked plastics I would put stickers all over it. |

From the racer side of this question; I have signed contracts with the companies that sponsor me, and all of them require stickers to be on the bike. Some even have a minimum number of stickers required and some even have placement requirements.

www.hookit.com Not sure if any of you have heard this yet, I am new here, but this is an amateur way to get a sponsorship from big names. You dont even have to have raced yet and you can get discounts. Check it out.

As far as product stickers go, I say to each their own. If it makes you happy then go ahead. I do find it a bit silly to have energy drink decals everywhere or stickers for products you don't use.

If a sponsor truly helps me beyond just giving me contingency money for winning then I will put their stickers on everything I own. I have some long time sponsors that to be honest my loyalty will focus with the individual that represents the company more then the company it self. An example if this would be my 6 year Dunlop contract. Even though I had a contract with them it was just your generic professional support of free tires and seemed like formality to keep me off their competitors brand. On the other hand the people at sport tires services who represented Dunlop all those years stood behind me and went the extra mile to help me out so when they swapped brands when Dunlop went to **** I followed them and not the sponsor.
You will randomly see moto industry stickers on my non moto related toys, those are the brands and people who are my true sponsors. If it was just a stick that came in a box then it won't make it onto my toys unless it's a bad ass stick and matches my color scheme. Like this one because we all know I can't say no to orange |

Marketing comes in all forms
When I was a track rider I used to put stickers on it to make it look cool because it is something that is on my bike or something use or do even if it's outside of motorcycling. After so many crashes having stickers can make it a PITA to repair and repaint. So then I wouldn't rock any stickers. Now with racing, I will only rock stickers if I have some sort of support or sponsorship through them...and I tend to pick my sponsors for things I really support and love and I do make sure to market them well.
