Bad Crash for my relative
My nephew had a really bad crash this weekend. I don't have all the details but I know he is in the ICU with lacerations to his stomach, liver and intestines along with broken ribs and collar bone(s). He just got a new Kawasaki Versus 650 and was out riding with a group of friends and hit a wire being dragged along behind a large truck. There is a little confusion as to what kind of truck (either Dump truck or Box truck) but it appears that the truck snagged a low hanging wire, run across the street, and as he (lead rider) and the group began to pass the truck he was thrown from his bike when the wire caught him right below his rib cage! He was wearing most of the gear and did not get any head injuries but his jacket did not have any chest protection. He is conscious now and talking but in a lot of pain with a couple of tubes snaked down his throat! He was accelerating to pass the truck and caught the wire across his body which stopped his forward progress and his body absorbed all the energy thru his abdomen and then he was flung onto the ground! We are so lucky this was not a fatal accident! He is a Police officer with a wife and 4 children. I will update after I have more details to what happened. Everything I know is third hand from his direct family to my wife so details are still a bit vague.

Update
Thank you everyone for your prayers and support.
I am happy to report that my nephew Gerig is now out of the hospital and home with his 3 sons. He was in the ICU for nearly 2 weeks and had to have 2 surgeries to stop the bleeding into his lungs. Gerig works as a police officer and body guard for a Judge in his home town. He was out riding with a bunch of friends including the mayor when the crash happened. The mayor is making sure that his Police officer insurance will foot most of the bills. Officially he was off duty but because the Mayor was with him they can claim he was actively working as a body guard for him. This will help them with the hefty cost of the hospital and surgeries! The bike is a total loss and they don't have the same insurance as we do in America so it is not clear what will happen with that yet. So glad to have him out of the Hospital and back home. Some of you know that my wife had to leave for the Philippines last week because her mother is very sick. Gerig was in a room 3 floors above my wifes mother! Rough 2 months for my wifes family but I hope this is the start of things improving! |
