K&N oil filter
It appears some of the tracks have banned K&N and other oil filters with the welded nut, including Mid-Ohio.
http://www.midohio.com/mid-ohio-cour...3-requirements "The following oil filters are NOT permitted: K&N, High Flow, and Vortex" There is also a recall https://www.knfilters.com/mobile/recallkn204

Mid-Ohio banned them after 6 failures on track early this season. We could care less about the quality or brand, it's all about the safety of the rider.
We have given FREE filters to many riders who passed through tech and didn't know about the ban. We are doing our best, but can't have filters for every bike on hand. We also offer a one time pass to those who show up with said filters. They are put in a yellow jersey to let other riders know that they need to not follow in the tire tracks of that rider. It's a sad realization of what is currently happening with the hardware bits. Trust.... a rider's in front of me failed and oiled the track. MINE failed too, luckily during a short test ride before going to the track. Please, please, please check your stuff. imho... I believe that some riders are using the nut on the end as a torque point to tighten the filter down. Then this in turn weakens the welds for the nut, causing the failure and leaks. But that is just my opinion.

For the non-nutted filters, we are just putting a large hose clamp around the filter and then wiring the hose camp. ymmv

Ultimate bottom line: It is my believe that the installer is the ultimate fault and stop gap, as it is to their ultimate skill in detecting issues and risk assessment. Now.. having said that, I believe that a faulty install of a k&n can cause a problem where there was none before. On the other hand, I also believe that a properly manufactured product will not fault under normal use conditions.
I will be completely honest here. I have 4 bikes, 3 of those 4 have k&n nutted filters without issue, but they are older per the recall. The only one that failed is my track r6 that receives the most oil changes and attention AND was for sure part of the recall. Another bottom line imho is that the manufacturer has assumed responsibility and recalled their product. Personally, I will avoid the product until proven once more by those that can assume more risk than me.

Bill P.S.; Oops, I just read the previous posts. You should never use a wrench to tighten a "spin-on" oil filter.

You missed the point. Point is they know there is an issue with the filters. Other part numbers of the K&N have failed in the track.

A similar thing happened with Fram oil filters a decade or more ago. WERA banned them for a while because of poor quality control. Filters were blowing off racebikes and dispensing oil all over the place. As far as I know there is no longer an issue with Fram filters nowadays.

Actually, many orgs have banned K&N because of failure. At one of the motoamerica rounds this summer, it was brought to K&N's attention, they had no clue that race clubs banned their product.

Year before last, there were some failures. That's when WMRRA and OMRRA started calling for OEM only. I hadn't heard there were more this year until I saw the recall and figured it was old news.
All that said, my last filter had to be removed using the screwdriver method, so I can sympathize with people missing that nut.

If I remember right, CVMA banned all aftermarket last year after a brutal crash of a rider rep due to someone else's filter failure.
