So, are you guys gonna kick me out?
Okay so, I bought a new Ninja. It's really not my fault. I absolutely couldn't help it: it's a 2008, with 17k miles, has never been dropped or wrecked, and only has noticable scratches on one lower fairing. No other cosmetic problems, nothing mechanically wrong at all, and it rides smooth as silk. The BF rode it home from the seller's, a 300 mile trip, without a single problem. It was $1600.
However......it's an EX500. And I'll likely sell the 250, since I really didn't have the money to spare. Does this mean I'll be banished from Ninjette? Posted via Mobile Device |

Here it is:
Bought it yesterday, from a member of the SV forum my BF, Craig, belongs too. The seller gave me a special price because of that; I think it was a fantastic deal, no? Fantastic enough to drive 600 or so miles in a day to buy it....did that yesterday. Craig rode it home after I bought it....300 miles in 40 degree weather. What a trip! It is the big brother to my 250....they're exactly the same color. In the pic, you can see the scratches to the lower fairing. Also, the guy I bought it from wasn't the original owner, and he said that when he got it, the tip of the front fender was damaged, so he trimmed it off. I don't think it looks bad, though. The only thing I don't love about this bike: it's SOOO quiet! The little brother makes MUCH more of a racket than this guy. I guess the previous owner of the 250 de-baffled the exhaust; the 500's is unmodified. Seriously, I have sewing machines that are louder than this bike! I REFUSE to spend money on noise, though, so I'm either going to have to live with it, or get my bike-builder neighbor to mess with it some. It's KILLING me to have to sell the 250, though. Today, we went on an all-day ride: my friend on his 80-something Sportster, my BF riding tandem on the 500 with my 12yo daughter, and me on the 250, for one last ride.....and I had a blast on it. The BF is posting it up for sale on Craigslist as I type this, and I fricking hate it. I will be SO sad to see the little guy go. Maybe I should have him post the ad like this: "2001 Ninja 250 - it's a girl's-bike....you don't want it"

Debbie,
Nice bike. One suggestion, though... Even if you can't afford to keep both bikes, perhaps you should keep them both for awhile to compare them just to make sure you like the 500 more than the 250. It would be a shame for you to sell the 250 and later realize you prefer the 250 more? Just a thought... have fun whatever you decide. |

A softer ride....hmm. I wouldn't say softer; I went for a ride around my neighborhood, where we have speed humps, and before I hit the first one I was thinking it would sort of glide over it like a Cadillac, but it didn't. It actually felt a little harder than the 250.....maybe because it's heavier. However, it IS a more substantial feel....like more THERE, and it's very nimble and responsive.
I am happy so far, but I decided to take Kim's advice and not post the ad for the 250 yet. I had to yell "STOP THE PRESSES!!!", but it worked. We'll see.

I'm not saying one bike is better than the other, but since you have the opportunity, I think it's smart to be sure of which is the better bike for you.
have fun deciding. |

omg.. $1700! i would buy it right away! seeing how the bikes condition looks to be in real good shape, and the previous owners didnt get carried away doing mods that could risk damaging the bike.
i would keep the lil 250 for solo rides, and take out the 500 to go tandem with my gf it would be perfect!

Normally I don't like the look of the ex500's, but something about that bike just catches my eye and I'm not talking about just the price tag. Nice bike!

Congrats!
Nice looking bike, that is one of the EX500 factory colors that actually looks good! Some of the colors on the EX500 seem like they're designed to get the buyer to find whatever extra money they need to upgrade their purchase. I'm remembering a "pumpkin orange" that would make you flinch when you see it. If it's that bad, it doesn't matter how much you saved!

Thanks, everyone! I am very happy.
So today I texted Craig and said "go ahead and run the Craigslist ad; I don't need two bikes"......and then 5 minutes later I said forget it. I cannot make up my mind. Alex (don't you dare laugh at me for this, but....) can I still go wherever I want in the Forums, or am I banished now?

You can go wherever you want and continue to post wherever you want, there is no banishment of any kind, don't worry. :-)
We have a specific area here where people who have gotten new machines (whether or not they still have a ninjette) can chat about their new machines as much as they want. So if it is a tech question about the EX500, or other non-250 specific question, it probably belongs in this lair section, that's all.

Congrats, Debbi. That's a really nice bike. I sold my Ninja a couple of months ago and bought a brand new Honda NT-700V touring bike. When my back heals up in the next year and a half to two years, I'll probably get a new FI Ninjette in GREEN. Falling off my house was sort of dumb. 69 year olds don't bounce too well.

I couldn't resist the deal on my 08 500, same color too, but i'll never let the 250 go. Sounds like you'll have to explain to your BF how the three of you can't ride anymore with him and daughter on 500 and you on 250. Wgat a tragic loss to "our" quality of life, DEAR.

That wasn't a deal, it was a steal! that's an awesome price. Enjoy it!
I kept my lil ninja for a couple of months also while having my new bike to make sure I wasn't regretting anything. Was not easy deciding to sell her - I wasnt trying very hard to get rid of her - still miss having it though I do love my new bike. |

Congrats on you Ninja 500. I've heard nothing but good about it. And have considered getting one myself at one point.
Instead, I just got this Takana 600, and am keeping both bikes - it and my 2005 Ninja ZZR 250 - for a while, since they offer different riding experiences. In the mean time, I have both bikes tentatively for sale, to see what they would bring. Even if I end up selling the Ninjette, I would still stay in the club, because I like it's atmosphere. And I might one day just get another Ninjette. Riding the 600 is a psychological experience. It is calming, since it makes riding the 250 a stress-free and relaxing experience. |

Debbi, I am glad that you were able to experience "Quiet Power". My Ninjette had the stock exhaust but at 75-80 it had a wail like a Lamborghini--a nice sound, for sure, but tiring after a while.
The NT-700 has that same trait your 500 has--quiet, and definitely planted. I noticed it most on secondary roads when a tractor trailer approaches going the opposite direction. There is none of that slipstream buffeting. I can't wait till spring. We have another week of sub-zero temperature working its way down from Hudson Bay, Canada. Our oil bill this month topped $600.
