Missed my turn :/ First time laying it down
So the other day I was riding home from class, about an hour away from my house. Went a new way home just for the sake of exploring. Looked up the route before I left and it was pretty simple. I cam to the road that turns onto the highway and although it was a 2-way road, the street sign said "Hwy 20 off ramp". This caused me to hesitate for just a second because I didn't want to turn onto a highway offramp. I then realized it was in fact the right road and began to turn. However, the brief hesitation caused me to be past the normal turn route onto the road, and led me directly into the 2-3 inch deep gravel buildup in the middle of the intersection. As soon as my eyes went back onto the road I knew what was coming. The back tire slid out from underneath me, and I landed on my right shoulder, elbow, and hit my head on the ground (thank God for full face helmets). My immediate thought was "$#!& my bike!". So i quickly hopped up lifted up my bike and moved out of the road and gave it a look. Nothing but a little road rash on the plastic, a small crack, and some scrapes on the exhaust. Other than that, no damage and the bike rode fine.
As for myself, just a little road rash on my elbow and shoulder, some body soreness for a day or 2, and a lesson learned.

Don't make a last second turn. Keep going and just circle back.

Always have a plan for the corner coming up. Your plan went out the window when you changed your mind at the last second. You said you have road rash... were you wearing gear other than your helmet?

Yeah I was wearing a leather jacket, jeans, and gloves. Road rash wasn't all that bad, just scraped me through my jacket, but didn't even rip the jacket. Would've been even worse without the coverage.

Follow-up question about vision:
Did you see the gravel patch in the first place, or only after you changed your mind? Think carefully and try to recall in detail. I'll put my money on not picking up that gravel patch until it was too late. Knowing it was there might have changed the outcome (you'd probably have made the corner if it hadn't been there, right? Much has been written about "wide" vision by various track and safety gurus. It's a very useful skill on both road and track. You'd be amazed at what you can actually see once you start paying attention to vision and seeing, not just looking. Example: Every race track has its little quirks... bumps in the pavement that are notable. At Palmer, MA, there's a bump exactly on the line in Turn 5. It's just a heave in the pavement, and nearly invisible to the casual observer. But once you've hit it, you see it every time... even though you're cranked over, knee down and driving for the exit as hard as you dare. Same deal at NYST Turn 3 second apex. Double-bump right at the apex cone.

I'm glad you are ok, and you know what you did wrong. I agree, on the missed turn, go past it and come back around.
