why is my voice hoarse after I ride..
I noticed that after I ride for about 45 minutes or longer, and get off the bike and talk, my voice is really hoarse and deep lol. does this happen to anyone else? it could be cold-related cause I didn't notice this back in summer when I did longer rides. I dont talk while I ride, it's not like I'm screaming at my bike for an hour haha
..or maybe it's just that riding my bike is turning me into a man the longer I ride |

Also, air is more dense when it is cold and it can be harsher on the throat/vocal cords. Regardless of our helmets, cold air is still entering our bodies at a pretty fast rate. I've been singing for many years and one of the most important things to remember is that the vocal cords like to stay in a specific temp range. And the cold air rapidly traveling to the back of your throat will dry up everything. It's partly just a side-affect of the cold winter air, but like Alex implied, stay well hydrated and it shouldnt happen as often.

It's because you're screaming, isn't it, Clarisse?
Like the lambs.... You still wake up sometimes, don't you? You wake up in the dark and hear the screaming of the lambs. And you think if you save poor Catherine, you could make them stop, don't you? You think if Catherine lives, you won't wake up in the dark ever again to that awful screaming of the lambs.....

I would assume that the problem may be associated to humidity and temperature changes, as explained above. Protecting your neck from the cold stream of air is important for keeping your body heat, as much heat is dissipated in that area due to the big and numerous blood vessels that it contains. The opposite applies for summer days: cool your neck down: http://www.soundrider.com/archive/sa..._youre_hot.htm It could be your ear as well, affected by the sustained turbulence of air inside your helmet, even if you wear ear plugs. Has somebody else noticed such change in your voice?

nm, I am lost today....
Try chewing some gum or candy. Happen any other time, say like raking leaves/shoveling snow in the cold? How do you store your helmet? Do you suffer from allergies? Basically, if keep your mouth closed more, relax and breath through your nose would it still happen?

haha I breathe through my nose, wear a scarf when riding, and store my helmet indoors when I am not riding. it doesn't happen any other time. like I said it doesn't bother me and it goes away in half an hour or so
it's probably the cold/wind/humidity. I just rode to class (50 min ride) and it was warmer today and my voice is normal. so it's probably that! |

OMG, that must be it. more of a 'YEEEEEEEEEHAAAAAAAAAAAWWWWW' but occasionally a 'WHEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEHEHEHEHEEEEEEE' coming out of a turn.
haha I never breathe with my mouth open, always and only through my nose! apparently there are a lot of reasons why breathing through your mouth is bad for you.. other than that it makes you look kinda stupid with your mouth hanging open all the time |

Eh, try being an asthmatic with a stuffed nose, i don't care how stupid i look, oxygen is goooood.
Can't say I've ever gone hoarse during a ride. I know i have gotten a sore throat from singing very badly to whatever tune was playing. I am so glad no one can hear me.

How tight do you have the helmet strap? I cinch mine down until its snug but not choking me. I can talk, shout, drink water, or snack with the helmet on.

I typically just talk to myself while riding rather than singing, I've only run into the problem of a sore throat when I hadn't had anything to drink and when I scream into my helmet due to a near death experience, someone else's fault as when it would be my fault then I can just accept it much more easily. Other than that just check your helmet that it's clean enough with the ventilation and you should be good to go.
