Mirror placement and your preferences
Which do you prefer, seeing directly behind you or seeing what's to the left/right & behind? I used to have my mirrors pointed outwards, which allowed me to see who was in the lane next to and behind me. I recently changed the positions so that I can see directly behind me without doing any chicken dancing with my arms. The rear is now visible, but I've lost visibility to the other lanes. I do head checks out of habit, so I check before I merge into another lane. It's nice not having to contort myself to check what's behind me. I don't have mirror extenders either. You can position them so they show what's directly behind you. I'm also a big guy and I can still see behind me.
What do you prefer?

I placed those little stick on convex circular mirrors in the upper inside corner of my mirrors to see what's next to me. The rest of the mirror is directed behind me, so that inside area with the convex mirror would be useless before I added the stick ons because it was showing me.

I have some of those convex mirrors from Cycle gear. Next to useless since they're so small. Maybe a larger one would be better.

I can see to my sides and have to duck my head a bit to see directly behind me.
The best positioning though would probably be such that you can see directly behind you since I never switch lanes without completely looking over my shoulder first anyway, so there's really no point in seeing what's to my sides I guess.

Mine are 2" and have a angle base to them so I can spin them 360' to adjust the view but yes they are small and limited in detail but hey that part of my mirror was useless so I figured it couldn't hurt.

I have mine so i can see a car coming up until they get into my peripheral. However, my left mirror is tilted inward more where if i lift my arm I can see what's behind me...since I'm usually in the furthest left lane.

I had mine set so the mirror itself looked directly behind me (too many tailgaters around here) and convex mirrors to check the lanes beside me. I had it set so as soon as I saw headlights in the convex the cage was right off my tail, when I lost the cage from the main mirror, and fully in the convex, they were just out of my view beside me. Worked fairly well too.
Thinking of getting smaller convex ones for the new mirrors though. The big stick on's from wal-mart do take up a lot of real estate on the mirror.

I can't wait til they create HUD helmet visors with a rear view cam. It'd be pretty cool to see your speed and RPM's on your visor.

From the position of sitting on it, my left mirror is cast more outward to see further into lanes while merging onto the freeway. My right mirror is pulled a little more in, but not real far since I'm generally in the 1st lane position and that helpscwith seeing behind without a lot of sacrifice.
When in doubt, headcheck! |

I lean to see behind me and prefer seeing what's on either side.

I have mine setup so that I can see behind me and towards the side a little. My elbows are always doing weird **** and I bob and weave if my elbows are in the way.
I always do a head check. |

I can't adjust mine to see behind me, at least without moving my arms, so they stay at kind of a happy medium, I can see the lanes beside me what's coming up, and I head check to see what's next to me. If I move my arms I can see behind me.

Also, I've found that putting the tip of the mirror as far out as possible does not increase the visible range one bit, though I see a ton of people doing that anyway. They look much better pointing slightly up and I can swear that when properly adjusted I get more viewing range. Try it!

My right mirror is set to mostly see behind me and the left mirror to see the next lane. Since most of the time when I ride there is no lane on the right, just the shoulder or curb.
