Sketchy DIY garage shenanigans
Ever get creative in the garage to get something accomplished and the method used was questionable at best and in hindsight could have ended very badly... or maybe it did?
Thats what this is about So the other week i managed to get a spring off a shock using thee old ratchet strap method. It sucked, it was questionable and to get the spring back on i decided i would devise a new questionable method instead. So i made a homemade spring compressor out of a piece of 2x8, some thread all 12mm, some nuts and a 10x2x1/4" piece of T6 aluminum alloy. Seemed simple enough. It worked great... kinda, problem was the hole in the 2x8 (pine) was to deep (2" hence 2x8) to get the spring stop into position without compressing the spring quite a bit. So i kept wrenching on the nuts little by little while the T6 started to show some signs of bending and the piece of pine creaked with each quarter turn of the ratchet. But it worked and i got everything back together. sure the piece of pine or T6 could have snapped in half at any point releasing the energy of several hundred pounds in a split second sending pieces of wood, metal ect... flying who knows where but it didn't Just one of my sketchy DIY jobs that i live to tell the tale about

Wrenching with my dad years ago, we needed to pull a seized engine out of an '86 mustang. We had the cherry picker (engine hoist) but we couldnt get it high enough to clear the car. so we took 4 ratchet straps and attached them to the front bumper of my '89 ford ranger, ran them over the roof and ratcheted the picker into the truck bed for extra height. The straps were then used to hold the picker in the bed while we pulled the engine with it. In the end, I had blown shocks and the sides of the bed twisted in from the weight on the straps but the engine was out lol drove it down the road to a buddy's junkyard with the engine swinging in the air Redneck? Hey it worked lol
