Had A Very Close Call and Would Appreciate Some Advice
Hi Guys,
I recently had a very, very close call on my 250 in downtown L.A. To make a long story short, I had to swerve away from some debris in the road and a guy accelerating in the lane to my right clipped my foot peg, miraculously somehow missing hitting my legs (and probably knocking me off the bike). I was able to keep it up, even though the rear brake was jammed down and the foot peg was nearly ripped off. I pulled over (the guy in the BMW kept going) and unjammed the rear brake so I could, very carefully, ride the bike the 2 miles back to my house. Anyway, I'm a novice at bike repair and was wondering if any of you guys could tell me (a) what part this is in the photo that's cracked, and (b) whether it's feasible to repair it myself with basic tools. The shop near my house said the part's $300 and labor is $95/hr . I'd really appreciate any feedback you guys can give, and ride safe! -Sam |

i like that cover story. anyway just buy a used rearset on ebay. you can find it cheap. maybe under $40.
replace it yourself, its only a few bolts. the shop near your house is trying to take you for all they can get out of you.

Rearsets are super easy to replace, few bolts off, new part on, done. Looks like is is the part you need: 35063-0078 STAY,FR,RH
Yeah, new i just saw them from $70-$100 so avoid that shop.

I've never done it but all indications show replacing the rear set shouldn't be too hard. Fix it yourself, go back to the shop, show them, and tell them how much you did it for. Then tell them to go f*ck themselves

Something like this (but used) and a more decent shop is what you need: http://www.ebay.com/itm/88-07-Kawasa...e8dd50&vxp=mtr

Thanks
Hi guys,
Thanks to everyone for the quick response and the great advice, esp. Teri. I was able to find the part, including shipping, for < $80. Now even if I wind up gong to the shop for the labor I'm going to still save ~$200. I really appreciate all the advice, you guys really helped me out! |

You can fix it yourself I promise, however I understand your reluctance. Whatever you do do not take it to the shop that wanted $400.

You are welcome Sam, glad it helped. I'm bizarre, i like looking at parts diagrams so pulling one up and finding the right part is just a few clicks away.
I suspect once you get it in your hand and look at it you'll be able to figure it out. Though i would seriously suggest finding a new shop as you've just shown how much they are ripping you off on the cost of the part.

Buy a metric hex (allen) key set and at least try to do it yourself before paying for a full hour @$95. You might even have the exact right sized one laying around from some IKEA furniture. Lefty loosey, righty tighty.
Just look for something like this at Sears, Home Depot, etc. You want metric. http://www.sears.com/craftsman-26-pc...&blockType=G10 Or this: http://www.sears.com/husky-folding-h...&blockType=G22 |

$400+?!?!?! That's absolutely ridiculous. This is a really cheap and easy fix. Don't take the bike in to the shop.

that's almost as bad as when I paid a shop $200 to tell me "oh yea, your engine...yea that's blown good, it'll be cheaper to replace it than to rebuild it"

Don't forget blue Loctite. You want those bolts to stay put.
Sounds like you don't have a lot of mechanical experience. Be careful to not overtighten things. There are lots of fasteners on bikes that thread into aluminum... easy to strip. Nice and firm is enough.
