Bike dies w/o choke

I was trying out my uncles Vulcan 500 yesterday. After riding around a bit with the choke on, I figured the bike was warm enough, so I shut the choke off. Whenever I came to a stop, the engine would shut off and wouldn't run again w/o choke.

What's the reason for that? I know he hasn't ridden the bike for a while, exactly how long I'm not sure right now. Is this an effect of old gas?

Old gas or time to clean the carbs. Just because it's an older cruiser, don't mean much different between that and the ninja. Idle circuit mang.

bad gas and/or dirty filter. I cleaned my filter on the 250 this weekend and it fires up like a champ now.

Hmm seems as if i must clean the carbs eh? Would running some seafoam through it do the trick? Or am I about to have my head chopped off for even suggesting the idea...

Depends on how bad the carbs are. Ran a tank of seafoam through my ninja and it did the trick for me

Seafoam is the armchair psychologist diagnosis of depression... "just get out more"

I recommend the carbs get a good cleaning. Seafoam is the bandaid on the broken leg. Don't waste the bandaid until after you set the bone, put a screw through the fracture, and stitch up the wound.

cliffnotes
-seafoam after you clean the carbs
-i agree, idle circuit, pilot jet, mixture screws, water in the fuel, run ethanol free if the bike plans to sit for any period of time (unridden)

My dirt bike runs like garbage since I use it so infrequently. Really after 10 minutes of slapping the rev limiter it'll run fine. And I'm talking after not starting for 3 or 4 months.

It's always the idle circuit and if cleaning that doesn't stop it you will have to clean it again until it does.
Seafoam does not dissolve rust particles, grit or any of the microscopic stuff you find on careful dismantling.

The future is fuel injection thank God. In 20 years we will wonder why we put up with carbs, just like we did with contact breakers.

Old gas, dirty air filter, low idle speed adjustment, dirty carbs, old spark plugs or all of the above. Take your pick. Start with the easy stuff first. Try Star Tron Fuel Treatment before you rip into the carbs.

Could be your idle cable. I had this issue. When the idle cable came loose I could only run with choke on.
