Visor up or down?

What do you do?

I've found that most of the time I end up riding with my visor up. I wear prescription sunglasses underneath so my eyes are still covered. I only really put the visor down if it's raining or there's a lot gravel or dust.

Are there any benefits to one or the other?

Are your prescription sunglasses rated to stop a rock kicked up by the car in front of you? Ever wonder what happen if a flying insect flue into your helmet and can't get out? Especially a stunning flying insect?

With my full face, I wear visor down or slightly cracked, depending on my speed and the temps. I don't like the feeling of wind hitting my face because it affects my breathing. Also, I have had more than my fair share of bees and wasps landing on my glasses cause they slipped through the gap.

With the modular, in town I found myself riding with the chin bar up in slow speed situations. But once I began picking up speed, everything came down and sealed me from the wind.

On a more practical side, I keep the visor down as in the event of an accident, it'll do a better job protecting my face with it down. Seen enough helmets with visors scratched beyond recognition that I don't want to think about the skin underneath had it not been in place.

When I was riding with sunglasses and a clear shield I would occasionally leave the visor up if I was doing under 15 to 20 mph.

Now that I have a dark smoke shield and no sunglasses the visor is down all the time.

Sounds like visor down is a safer bet. I hadn't considered the bee issue.

I think I got in the habit of riding with it up because my old HJC would fog up no matter what I did. The new Scorpion doesn't have that problem at all.

I've been nailed with enough bugs, rocks, and other road debris, to remind me to keep the visor down. I'll raise it when stopped, and sometimes I'll ride with it cracked open a notch, but it's there for a reason. Even though I almost always wear sunglasses underneath, with the visor up there has been plenty of room for crap to hit my face and get into my eye.

A few years ago I had to make two trips to the eye doc within a few months to remove a small piece of metal that had gotten lodged in my eye (while riding with visor up for a moment, of course). After she chastized me appropriately the first time, I had to go back just a few months later for the same thing happening again.

Down all the time, I don't like crap in my face or eyeballs. Also, it's there to protect your face. I go ballistic if I even get an eyelash in my eyes, as that is a very uncomfortable feeling. I also wear glasses, unless they are goggles, glasses don't protect your eyes either because they don't enclose/seal your eyes.

what is the point in riding with a visored helmet... but having the visor open? if you don't like the visor get a helmet designed for use without a visor. like a dirt helmet with gogs. you can get prescription gogs

Definitely going to start going visor-down now. My new helmet has the nose thing (don't know what it's called) that helps with fogging.

Hey, I had a bee fly into my helmet and it's a full face with the visor down. lol

Most helmets I've seen have small notches that will hold the visor in "just cracked" to "partly open" or "mostly open". Sometimes takes wiggling it to find that spot, but you should be able to ride with a small amount of air flow that'll help with the fogging.

My problem is if I try to crack my visor in foggy conditions my glasses fog up just as fast! Then i really am blind!

Yeah, my new one has a "slight crack" setting that works well.

It was really just that old HJC that fogged up more or less immediately upon closing. That got me in the habit of riding visor-up unless it was raining heavily.

Around town I usually have the visor cracked open slightly (like maybe a 1/2 inch) to allow fresh air in. Once I get out on the highway I'll slap the visor shut tight.

Riding around town, I keep it in the cracked position to keep it from fogging up. Anything above 40 mph and it's completely closed because that seems to be the point where the amount of wind coming in causes my contact lenses to dry out.

I normally ride with visor down if I'm going to be going more than 25mph. If I'm sitting in city traffic, I leave it cracked open 1/8 of an inch.

The only time I have the visor up is during red lights (if it's really hot out).

I've been hit by bugs and other crap that gets kicked up from car tires before. It sucked!

I've always wondered.....how do Harley guys do it with sunglasses and a tiny helmet that resembles a big yarmulka? Do they not feel pain??

Pretty much this and what everyone else has been saying.
Also, I have heard a lot of people complain about loss of peripheral vision with glasses in which case I honestly suggest wearing contacts.

My prescription is very light, so I don't have any peripheral vision problems.

I rode home from work today with the visor down except at a few long stoplights and stop-and-go. I commute from the West Loop in Chicago about an hour out to the suburbs so there are some slow stretches.

It'll take some getting used to but seems to be worth it based on everyone's comments.

Visor down, I got hit right in my left eye by a big ass hornet at 45mph on my way to work the other day. If my visor hadn't been down I probably would have been in the hospital at the least... I usually keep it cracked 1/4 inch at the bottom unless it's chilly or I'm riding above 40mph for a period of time.

I almost always have my sheild up, I have Wiley x climate control glasses, with the gasket that keeps the wind out and dust and everything. They are also my offroad "goggles" and have been great since 2009.

It's time for a new pair! Silly prescription change!

Up until today I've been riding with it down on the freeway and up on the main roads. This afternoon I had a bee hit me in the cheek while going 35mph. I'll now be riding with the visor down at all times.

Up if I'm in 1st gear in town, otherwise down. I have prescription glasses that generally will keep my eyes protected below 20ish mph but over that the wind starts going around them and stuff starts getting into my eyes which can be pretty bad for obvious reasons.

Visor closed but cracked open a notch when moving, unless on the highway, then it's completely closed and vents open.

Slow traffic or stuck in traffic, visor up, as its winter here and it fogs up.

I had prescription glasses, I got rid of them in favour of contact lenses. Glasses + helmet, you lose a lot of peripheral vision which is BAD and could cause an accident.

I don't find my helmet to be the cause of any loss of any vision. The visor is wide enough and I never see the shell of the helmet when turning and doing head checks.

Now with my glasses I do lose focus when trying to pull an Exorcist and twisting my head around to look straight behind me. I end up looking between the frame and my face, but that happens regardless of if I have a helmet on or not.

Just this weekend I took a large beetle to the visor at 70mph give or take, it's insides are still somewhat stuck on the visor. Getting hit by that thing in the face would have suck.

^ this is me too.

I've seen my boyfriend, who rides with the visor up a lot, get 2 bees in his helmet and once a bug slipped between the padding and his head. The thing wound up in his ear. He had to stop to get it out.

Down.. a while ago I rode into a swarm of bees, it felt like someone shooting pellets at me. I actually thought that someone had flung a handful of pebbles at me. I got stung on the inside of my thigh as well as on my wrist and had my visor been up probably would have had a few stings to my face as well

Slow traffic or stuck in traffic, visor up, as its winter here and it fogs up. I had prescription glasses, I got rid of them in favour of contact lenses. Glasses + helmet, you lose a lot of peripheral vision which is BAD and could cause an accident.

I actually thought that someone had flung a handful of pebbles at me. I got stung on the inside of my thigh as well as on my wrist and had my visor been up probably would have had a few stings to my face as well .
