Hitting the rev limiter
As dumb as it may sound, I am experimenting with running this tank of gas in the high RPM range to see how it affects my MPG. My riding style is pretty conservative, shifting between 6k - 8k.
For this tank, I decided to stay in 2nd for as long as I can to see how it affects my mileage. In the past 2,000 miles on this bike, I've only accidentally bumped the rev limiter once or twice, but never looked down to see what it looks like on the tach. Do your bike's tach look (or sound) the same when you hit the limiter? Last futzed with by cadd; September 7th, 2014 at 07:30 PM. |

after 14k mile I still have yet to hit the rev limiter. I guess i'm just too afraid as the engine sounds like it going to explode at that high of rpm. I have got it to just below redline when I got it up to 95mph, but that is it.

Omg, it will be interesting to see the results of your fuel consumption, but at the same time if it were my bike I would be having heart attacks every second. lol
I hope your bike will be alright, from what I've heard it's not good to red line anything. Adds too much wear and tear. After this experiment I'd recommend not hitting it again except on occasion

I get about 43 MPG, I manage to bounce off the rev limiter at least once a ride.

I hit the revlimter every time i ride my 250...granted it's a race bike and 6th gear pinned only gets me to 107 mph.
I still manage 35(ish)mpg some how... |

Here's a dumb question for you guys...
Does the limiter prevent you from a "money shift"? (traveling at 70mph and shift to 2nd gear and release the clutch lever out making the rpms hit well beyond the redline.....hence, causing a lot of motor damage). I would assume the limiter does NOT prevent a money shift? |

Update:
- On 7/20/2014, I filled up the bike. Odometer reading was 3,134. - Rode that tank of gas at (or near) redline for the entire week. - Today, 7/27/2014, I filled up again (requiring 3.45 gallons). Odometer reading was 3,230. 27.8MPG |

What did you used to get for mileage?

I don't care what anyone says, hitting the rev limiter over and over again will cause the engine to break after constant abuse.

Danny, they all are gunna break one day, it is inevitable. The key is to use those miles to the fullest enjoyment possible.

I'm sure a lot of thr track guys here run WELL over 100 miles at redline. The bike still performs normal this week. Back to shifting at 6-8k rpm. Suddenly, the bike feels weak. I just want to rev it out now. But it hurts when I think about the fuel economy.

Do the best of both worlds, shift around 10 or 11k......i would manage 60mpg when i did that, i would cruise in whichever left me around 6k.
I was honestly just happy on my trackday i used about half a tank of gas, i brought an extra 5 gallon container in case i needed it. 7 sessions of redlining the hell out of this little bike and i still had a good amount of fuel left. |

Hit the limiter once when i forgot to shift into 6th gear on the highway. lol
Wondered why the bike was surging like it wasn't getting enough fuel, then i seen the speed i was going and realized i had another gear to go. |

I try to shift before the rev limiter, because it tends to kill my drive, but I hit it at least once almost every race, usually at the start. |
