Awesome thread! I'm a non-fiction type, so in no particular order, here are books that gave me quite a lot of insight/knowledge:

1. The Ethical Slut: A Practical Guide to Polyamory, Open Relationships & Other Adventures by Dossie Easton and Janet W. Hardy
2. Sexual Fluidity: Understanding Women's Love and Desire by Lisa M. Diamond
3. Atheism: The Case Against God (The Skeptic's Bookshelf) by George H. Smith
4. Random anarchist pamphlets
5. Little House on a Small Planet, 2nd: Simple Homes, Cozy Retreats, and Energy Efficient Possibilities by Shay Salomon, Nigel Valdez and Frances Moore Lappe
6. Real Goods Solar Living Source Book - Special 30th Anniversary Edition: Your Complete Guide to Renewable Energy by John Schaeffer
7. Random bits and pieces of information on the internet via StumbleUpon

I am currently reading (rather slowly): The Intelligent Investor: The Definitive Book on Value Investing. A Book of Practical Counsel (Revised Edition), it's already becoming a favorite. Probably missing a few others, but can't think of them atm.

#1 sounds quite interesting. Open relationships. Hmm...
I've read a few books on theology myself. The Jesus Mysteries is a good one I'm currently rereading.

I enjoyed The Kite Runner more because I live near and am familiar with the places he was talking about.

I unfortunately haven't done much reading for fun in recent years. I think the Magic Kingdom of Landover series by Terry Brooks was the last thing I read for fun and I enjoyed it.

Have you read his others, A Thousand Splendid Suns and The Mountains Echoed? I highly recommend A Thousand, but the Mountains Echoed wasn't as enjoyable to me.

about 6-8 years ago I spent an entire summer with my grandparents at the beach, they didn't have a large selection of books. Read a few old war books, a russian mystery novel and the anne of green gables collection. I picked up the first book completely by chance and was hooked within the hour.
That summer I read anne of green gables, anne of avonlea, anne of the island, anne of windy poplars, anne's house of dreams, and anne of ingleside. I believe that is the complete series. Down the line I also watched the movies, preferred the books but the movies were good as well.
That summer was amazing all I did was read books, enjoy the beach, play golf & tennis, ride bicycles & skateboards, and spend quality time with my extended family as they dropped by for their time at the beach.

Probably my favorite book series that I've ever read, the lord of the rings trilogy and harry potter didn't even come close.

Awesome! Her whole collection can be downloaded as an audiobook for free off that website I told you about, librivox.org.
So much good literature there! I'm listening to Walden by Thoreau right now. I may relisten to Moby Dick next as it's been a few years. I'm recording one to make available right now too! I hope to have it up by the end of April.

If only audio worked for me. I have hearing loss and a natural inability to memorize concepts via hearing. Books kinda suck when you don't remember what happened 5-10 pages ago. I'm a visual person at heart, which is a large reason why I love books in the first place.

My current Fave is Words Of Radiance.
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/...ds-of-radiance
Its the Second book of the Stormlight Archive a planned 10 book Epic Fantasy series by Brandon Sanderson. The books in this series are big, He plans each book out as a trilogy and smashes them into one book with mini novellas in the form of interludes. He is the author that finished up the Wheel of times series and ended it fantastically. He is with out a doubt my favorite author right now. he develops the best magic systems the characters are full and rich and his world building is the best in the business. I cant say enough about him or his books and Words of Radiance is his best to date with out a doubt.

The Misborn Trilogy By Brandon Sanderson

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/68428.Mistborn

Great series with a unique magic system and fabulous world building. The plan for this series is to have three trilogy's set in this world. The First one is the Mistborn Trilogy the next set of books will be set in modern time and the final three books will be a space opera/Si fi style.

The Emperors Soul By Brandon Sanderson
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/...emperor-s-soul

This is a novella about 100 pages or so that is perfect in every way. He won the Hugo award for this book and it is a stellar book by all accounts.

The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss (Kingkiller Chronicle)
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/...me_of_the_Wind

This is a debut book by Rothfuss and it is one hell of a debut. The world building in this book is incredible. The pace makes it a page turner/one more chapter befor bed holy **** its 5 am! type of book. There are two books out sofar with the last book due out next year.

The Farseer Trilogy/ The Tawny Man Trilogy by Robin Hobb
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/...n_s_Apprentice

Robin Hobb has written two trilogy's about the Fitz and the Fool. What i liked about these books was the character development. She really puts her charqacters through the ringer and draws you into their world completely. You end up going through the emotional wringer with her characters a top notch series that she will be returning to this year.

Currently i just started Joe Abercrombie's First law series.

If you can find a copy of this book it is really good. Its about how the development of the moto GP two stroke technology was stolen from the original designer. And sold to the Japanese. Fascinating story.

Read this last week.

http://www.amazon.com/Double-Down-Ga.../dp/B00C5R7EE6

No matter which side of the aisle one leans toward, the underlying details of the campaigns on both sides were pretty riveting. I enjoyed it more than the one about the '08 election.

I like book series best. Watching the characters develop over the course of multiple books is the best.

Some of my favorite reads would be:
The Harry Potter Books (i'v read these more than i can count)
The Hunger Games
The Hollows series (AKA the Rachel Morgan series)
The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings
A Song of Ice and Fire (i can't wait for Winds of Winter to come out!)
The Twilight Saga

Lots more but these are my tops.
