From my short experience at the track, I learned that the turn one is infamous for this. A lot of riders find they are braking too early (I did this too) and try to brake the next lap too late. If you don't run off, you risk running to wide, and then you'll be on the off camber, where you can possibly lowside or run ever wider, off the track.

Turn one is unique because the fast line, isn't entering the corner at the widest point

So I've only ridden NYST going "Downtown" or clockwise. Watching the video, it seems to me the rider that got hit was changing his line in a braking zone, which shut the door on the rider coming up the inside. Judging by how much more straight there was before the corner actually started, the Duc would have made it just fine had the guy not shut the door on him.

At morning meetings before the track day starts, I sometimes announce this exact situation, asking riders to hold their line going into braking zones. Why? Because how much steering can you do under maximum braking? NONE. Changing your line in a braking zone is NOT being predictable. As a coach riding in all groups, I see it mostly in beginner groups, but sometimes even in advanced groups.

Even better example of brakes causing a low side when leaned over in off camber. Probably would have been fine and just blown the corner if he hadn't touched the front brake. Bummer!

Another coach's perspective...

This is a good example of a little patience going a long way.

I count 5 bikes ahead of him before the corner. There was no way the rider was getting around them all, so you "expect" everyone to just fall/merge in line nicely. That always doesn't happen, so for a track day, it's a bit aggressive for passing and should be frowned upon. If you catch someone, it's because your faster. Wait for a cleaner pass, track days aren't race days.

Skip a corner to save a session
Skip a session to save a day
Skip a day to save a season

Pretty simple stuff, just use your head. Rotten luck though...

Plenty of run off there for the speed he was traveling at. I've seen so many wrecks there because people try to save the corner after running in hot. It's not a race. Just run off and hope for the best.

Agreed. I'm a very cautious person on the track. That's why it's taking me so long to get "fast".
