Americas Cup

Wacky. It took me awhile to get interested in it, but it's gotten almost unbelievable. Oracle won another 2 races today. First team to get to 9 points wins, and they were down 8-1 as of the middle of last week. 7 straight wins, and suddenly things are tied, with a winner-take-all final race tomorrow. Sure wish I had bet on Oracle when they were down 8-1, may have been able to retire early at those odds.

America's Cup is like Nascar for San Franciscans and Marinites.

I've been boycotting until they bring it back to Newport, RI.

Then you really missed something special. The coverage was superb and the racing was incredibly exciting.

Watching hydrofoil sailboats literally flying over the water at 40 knots is jaw-dropping.

What impressed me most was the way they made sailboat racing actually understandable to the layperson without talking down to the knowledgable. That's not easy to do.

The venue was excellent. Sailing across SF bay gave you visual reference so you got a real sense of the speed of the boats and could easily figure out where they were. Plus the scenery was terrific… the Golden Gate, Marin headlands, Alcatraz, etc.

With the speed of these boats, each race was short enough that it held your attention from start to finish. Most races were over in half an hour, and there was a 40 minute time limit.

But the wildest thing was that comeback. It's been the equivalent of Game 7 of the World Series for a solid week! Oracle had to win EIGHT races in a row, do or die. Nobody comes back from that kind of deficit.

Congratulations to these guys. A class act all the way around, both teams.

I watched them testing that boat and was impressed. I didn't get to watch the races but I'm glad the USA won. I mean really, it's called the America's Cup.
