You left your blinkers on.

I tried. I'm actually really surprised he wasn't riding a Gixxer.

I have to say you put a lot more energy into telling someone their blinker is on then I would have.

Although I did try once to get the attention of a cage driver with his lights off on an early morning commute. I don't know if he was stoned or scared of me, but he just kept staring straight ahead at the car in front of him as we inched along in traffic.

Sometimes trying to help is actually only making a situation more dangerous.

Let people do what they do and it will avoid exasperating risk factors...

I do a ridiculous amount of driving. What I have learned is that you should not try to communicate with other drivers un-necessarily. Many other drivers are not equipped mentally to drive a vehicle while playing charades.

For me examples of conditions where warning the driver is very necessary.
-Motorcyclist whose license plate fell off
-Biker leaving a bar in Myrtle beach with his kickstand down
-18 wheeler with an inside tire losing its re tread in the back inside set
-Flat bed with the gas tank dragging on the road surface
-pannier or ridding bag came open and they might lose stuff
-A beautiful woman who totally needs to give me her number

Things that don't qualify
-blinker on
-headlight out
-break light out

Not that I don't want to help people out.

The problem is while they are reading my sign language they are probably going to crash.

Such as that clown featured in your video. Absolutely no critical thinking abilities there.....

Extra brownie points for carrying that Samaritan mind set. Be safe out there and try not to challenge any more fools to a street race

I've tried signalling to riders that blinkers are on, headlight is out, etc but most don't get it so I give up after the first try.

I did once roll up on a truck whose brake light was out. Caught him at a stop sign and motioned to roll the window down (yay for modulars and a smile).

I want to figure out a way to carry a premade sign that reads "You have a rear light out" or "Something is wrong with your car" and just hold it up to them as I ride by. Not sure how to keep it generic enough to limit the number of signs I carry but make it specific enough that they get the idea. Hurm

I've pulled in front of and speed matched people who leave their blinkers on, then camped there with my respective blinker on until they turn theirs off. Sometimes it's fun to see how many miles it takes them to get the hint and shut theirs off.

On that bridge it looked like there was 1 or 2 huge sections of metal grating. Did I see that right? That looks like it would be sketchy as hell to ride/drive on around fast flowing traffic in the rain.

Yes, metal grating on that bridge. Even without rain, the bike wigglers rapidly left and right. With rain, it I learned to be real loose on the handlebars and never switch lanes in the metal grating.

so I wasn't just seeing things.

I imagine it would be extremely difficult to quickly adjust course or speed while on top of those things in the wet.

I've never seen anything like that in the UK. We have metal cattle grates out in the country, but not on fast roads. We also have train tracks you have to cross, but they're obvious enough and on slow enough roads that I've never had a problem with them.

The main thing on UK road design that sucks for biker safety are car crash "safety" barriers (which double as biker squisher-slicers) and metal pole road signs/lamp posts.

I've seen a ton of videos of bikers getting badly injured sliding into or under those things.

Why do they use it? Is it stronger than tarmac/concrete? Is it because it allows water to easily escape during heavy rain?

Edit: @cadd - sorry for the thread jack. One of the reasons I have a squirrel avatar is because I'm slighty ADD... HEY LOOK A SQUIRREL! Or...

It's lighter, and in the case of the mackinaw bridge, allows the wind to go through. If the grating was not there, the bridge could actually hit it's harmonic frequency and start oscillating. The length of the susepnsion portion of that bridge is 8,614 Ft. (2,626 Meters)
and overall, it's 5 miles long!

They use that grating on all the small bridges between PA and NJ that i've been on.

Not a fan but you get used to it.

More on topic i once followed a women into a Quick Check parking lot to let her know she had 0 working brake lights... She said she wondered why i almost rear ended her when she braked for a deer... And no, i was close but not that close. LOL

All the many drawbridges that we have here in Florida use it because the strength/lightness ratio.

Learn more about this:
http://articles.mcall.com/2002-12-27...-welds-bridges

I have always seen these used on straight trajectories, as the traction when wet is very poor (by the way, water is the best lubricant between steel and rubber).

If a rider is smooth while rolling over that surface, dry or wet, nothing catastrophic will happen.

It is also a preferred material for catwalks of metal structures, like the ones around big steam boilers of power plants:

That grating on the Mackinaw didn't seem quite so awesome to me! It was still a bit wet the only time I went over on it, and it was somewhat less than confidence-inspiring as the front felt incredibly light and slippy.
