Stock exhaust. Shifting time questions.

Hey guys,

I recently bought my first 250r last year. The previous owner put on a HMF exhaust slipon on it and I've only been riding with it on. It sounds nice but my neighbors have decided enough is enough so I need to put my stock one back on.

The issue is that my tachometer recently stopped working. It's not a big deal since I can shift by sound now but I'm sort of screwed when I put my stock back on.

Any tips on what I should do? Are there any speedometer guidelines I can try to follow?

Hi Dan, the sounds of the rrrrrr's will not change that much by putting on the stock can. You should be able to continue to shift by feel after a ride or two. Just remember, when in doubt, upshift lol.

A 250 can nearly be shifted on the 10's on the speedo for a lazy sound respectful ride but trust your gut and all should be well.

Could you explain how are those four things related?

Lots of bikes don't even come with tachs, so you should be fine just shifting when you feel like it. Bumping into the rev limiter won't hurt anything and I can't imagine anyone actually rides 250s around at low enough RPMs to lug the engine unless they're just totally not paying attention.

I generally say to fix the root problem rather than adjusting bandaids.

The tach signal is a black wire forking off between the igniter and coil. The gauge itself is powered by the brown wire and uses the black/yellow common ground wire.

Depending on exactly what's wrong with it, it might not be too hard to fix the tach and make this all irrelevant. Even if you don't specifically need it to shift, I still think it's very handy to know your RPMs.

I agree with you. I've got all the fairings off right now trying to figure out if it's a wiring issue or not. I mean, everything else works fine, even the light behind the tach. I even checked to see if the needle was stuck or anything but no go. Any ideas?

Had your front sprocket cover off recently? If so, check to ensure the wires are not pinched.

I followed the service manual instructions.
16-57 disconnect BK lead. reinstall Bk screw. Turn engine on and connect the bk lead to screw to see if the pointer flicks.

It did not and recommends replacing the tach unit. But I don't see how this rules out that a wire is pinched somewhere down the line.

Actually, I don't see how this test does anything really. I'm sure I'm missing something here though....

Is your neighbor also your wife or mother? if not, why do you have to obey?

LOL no but I do like to go full throttle and have noticed it's excessively loud even with my helmet. I mean I set off car alarms if I'm amy where near 12k.

I mean, if you like the aftermarket exhaust and want to keep that...I think you should keep it! Just keep the revs below 4k when riding in the neighborhood. That's what I do! At 6:45am when I leave the house, I duck walk the bike from the garage to the sidewalk, off the curb and onto the street. I make sure I'm fully geared up and ready to roll before I start her up. Once I start her up, I immediately (within 2 seconds) leave and make sure I'm not going more than 3k RPM at any point until I leave the neighborhood.

This way the bike gets warmed up while at really low rpms and I don't piss anyone off

I agree with @cadd you can be neighborly, and keep your aftermarket exhaust, if you so wish.

But you need to fix that tachometer issue for sure as @InvisiBill has pointed out.
