From My AARP Driving Class....

I took an AARP defensive driving class a couple of weeks ago and one frightening fact came out during that class that made me really open my eyes...

Of the seniors citizens who are driving, the single most, number one cause for their accidents is the failure to yield the right of way.

When thought of from a motorcyclist's perspective, that can be a death sentence. So, for all that ride near senior citizens (or any vehicle for that matter), assume they don't see you because in reality, they most likely don't!

ride safe, guys and gals.

I always ride defensively and never assume I have the right of way. I am coutious even when aproaching an intersection where I have the green light, I always am ready to grab the brake and cluth and look for an out.

We're slipping people. This is the 5th post in this thread, and there hasn't been a single AARP crack at Kelly yet. Come on people, eye on the ball...

I actually just found this thread and was considering it, but I don't think I could say anything lol, especially since I don't know how old she actually is.

I got an invitation to AARP when I was 18. Idk if they just have no clue how old the people are that they send stuff out to or what

I do agree that senior citizens are really scary drivers. I'm constantly watching out for them as I'm driving in my cage. They scare the **** out of me!

The "older" drivers are on my list of things to avoid and steer clear of on the road....along with beige corollas, white work vans, and any vehicle that says "City of Toronto" on it.

I live in Florida where seniors don't "yield the right of way" because they feel they have the right of way. It's look out for me, as they drive blindly down the road. If you ever confront them about how they almost killed you they always answer, "you were going to fast".

Old drivers are out to get motorcyclists...

Then again, young drivers are out to get motorcyclists...

I always assume all drivers are out to get motorcyclists!

Well I would have picked up on it sooner but just got up from my two naps sorry (You know us old guys need frequent naps. That's why we can't take long rides, we nod off).

I was wondering what had happened to Kelly and was concerned that the home was not letting him have access to his computer. (I thought he may have been caught the attendants again and was on probation.)

Glad to hear he was just at the AARP meeting getting his permits renewed ( )

WOW, I didn't know "the home" had computers now, welcome back Kelly, glad to see the attendants unlocked your room so you can get out.

As for the old folks, when I rode a bicycle ALOT, and elderly lady got behind and continued to honk her horn. I kept motioning for her to pass, she would shake her head no and continue honking. I pulled into a church parking lot so she would pass, she must have been following me for several miles.

I bought my '08 A4 on October 12, 2007 at 2:30 pm. On October 13, 2007 at 12:30 pm, some old woman (I'm being nice) make a left turn at a light and wiped out my enitre front end. The car was 22 HOURS old!!!! Had a been on a bike, I can't imagine what would have happened. $18,000 damage and one broken finger b/c I laid on the horn as the airbag was being deployed. I swear by the safety of that car... As for the old woman, when asked why she turned right in front of me, "That car was not there before I started to turn." Ok, I guess I just fell out of the sky...

Has anyone else noticed that this often applies off the road as well? I get cut off in line, walking through doors, etc. I understand that older people think they don't have much time left and should always get to go first, but whatever happened to ladies first?? Jeez...

Alex, Zartan, you're keeping me on my toes! I always have to check the header ad when I look at this thread. No "jackpot" yet.

Let me help their keyword search: gerontology retirement elderly geriatrics aging

I guess growing up in a semi-retirement community kept me on my toes too. At the start of each season (when it finally cools off in the desert) I'd keep my eyes open for the "new arrivals" that were on the road, learning the local layout, while they're being distracted by each palm tree they pass. "Look Martha, another one!"

OK this is MY OPINION . I'm not trying to be sexist, racist or anything i'm just trying to point out the factors i have come to see a trend in. Over the past couple years i've learned to judge drivers based on appearance.

I look out for:

- Old
- Female
- Black/Asian
- Wearing a hat (inconclusive on baseball caps)
- Seat position (hugging the wheel or lying down driving)

and the no brainer

- Any distractions in hand

Again people say i'm racist, sexist.... you name it but i once saw an old black woman wearing a hat do a 12 point turn in what should have been a 2, max 3 point turn. Have nothing personal against anybody i'm just saying when it come to my life I floor it and get away from these people.

just don't be surprised when you're hit by some group not on your list.

edit... racist- The belief that race accounts for differences in human character or ability and that a particular race is superior to others.

I don't see it as racism just because it's been my experience that over time more often than not these traits have come up.

I think of it more as statistical data. I didn't take it very scientifically but it's been the case.

Like is saying overweight, white males are more prone to heart attack. racist/sexist? No, just over time scientist have recorded that trend.

The white teenage male is a whole other animal. If we're talking about making a small dumb mistake then my rules apply. If it was a teenage male regardless of other traits they'd be the ones to hit you going 120 mph after loosing control, not small accidents. again IMO.

I just listed the definition. If you see yourself in that definition, that's your problem.

My point is that if you include only the groups you listed to watch out for, don't be surprised when you're hit by a white supremest drinking beer in his pickup truck on his way to a rally.

We need to be equally aware of drivers around us, no matter what their race, color, creed, sexual orientation, gender, age, political association, etc. They are all equally out to get us!

I think it'd be less likely for a teenage white male to hit a bike because I find that they are on the lookout for them. Something about a bike catches the eye. I think it has to do with the moonwalking bear theory. Of course you are just as likely to fall down the stairs as to get in a bike wreck. (former statement not statistically correct) I generally just avoid other people and so far it seems to be working well for me. While the accident was tragic, at least the woman got to die doing something she loved. We could only be so lucky when our time comes.

This old man

This old man decided to level the playing field and got a Ninja. I sure get some strange looks when I take off my helmet. Another thing I learned after sailing 80,000 nautical miles---always give way to anything that is bigger than you are. I apply the same rule to my driving. Result: Zero accidents and tickets in 50 years.

My grandparents have a Lexus and a Mercedes. I feel bad for whoever they hit... and they will eventually hit someone.

Grandpa feels the need to drive slow in the left lane and cuss out travelers who pass on the inside or flash their lights.

Grandma... well... she's dangerous.

I learned real quick when I started riding. Had a 30ish women make eye contact with me, gave me the gesture to go ahead and then proceed to (what seemed like target fixation) try to run me over. I gave a twist of the wrist and she barely missed me. Looked at me at the next stop and gave the "I don't know" look Since then Trust NO ONE!!

It is a problem. I have a father in law with macular degeneration who insists on driving his SUV. His vision is just at the point where his licence wil go bye bye. He insists he has the right to drive. Wife is more kind than I am. I would have yanked his licence a year ago. I guess he will have to kill someone before he surrenders his "right" I always thought that driving was a priviledge. What do I know?
