2018 Northeast track day thread NH CT MA RI NY NJ ME VT PA

The current schedule/attendance post is always near the bottom of the thread.

Track Days 2018: The Braaap Awakens

It's WAY WAY more fun to do a track day when you hang out with others. So let's try to line up our schedules so we can do that, and make an effort to arrive at the same time so we can pit together.

What's new:

- NO TAMWORTH. They're not letting bikes on the track after all. (Sorry, Jay)

- Palmer counterclockwise! REMLAP REMLAP REMLAP

@Ducati999, @Bigballsofpaint, @BlackNinja8, @backinthesaddleagain, @twistedthrottle, @ttd, @csmith12, @Sirref @nickjpass

Would very much so like to go back to Palmer with TTD, my friend Kevin agrees and is in 100% if the opportunity arises.

We will be keeping an eye on things to come.

Thank you, Alex!

Let's put Pitrace on the radar/map this time as we tried to make that happen last season.

All the track info is here....

Palmer Motorsports Park, Palmer, MA
http://www.palmermotorsportspark.com/

There are sound limits at this track. You have been warned. Hasn't been a big deal, but if you've got one of those stupid-loud megaphone exhausts, you might have a really short day.

NEW this year... running in both directions!

Palmer is... is... well, just LOOK at it! How can you NOT want to ride here? Massive elevation change including a Laguna Seca-like diving turn.

Super-cool drone video .... worth watching!

Link to original page on YouTube.

Steely-eyed missile man and TTD instructor Paul Duval gives us a narrated lap:

Link to original page on YouTube.

Reverse direction, blue (second fastest) group:

Link to original page on YouTube.

Reverse with notes (car-specific but overall it does look useful)

Link to original page on YouTube.

Facilities: There is garage space available, rented per bay. You can fit four bikes in a bay. The full garage building is $50/day, while the open-sided "carport" along the pit all is $40/day. Garage has power. You're supposed to reserve at the Palmer website: Go here http://palmermotorsportspark.com/events.aspx and click through to find your event. It's pretty casual, so no biggie if you mess up.

There's a shower/rest room building. Showers are around back. There are also porta-potties... it's a big paddock. A bicycle comes in handy especially if you rent a garage.

Note: If you're looking at track maps, note that the turn numbers are not consistent. For our purposes, the left hander at the bottom of the hill after pit-out is Turn 2. The Turn 4/5 complex is the climbing left-right S. The diving left-hander is Turn 7. The big banked right-hand carousel is Turn 9, aka The Bowl.

Thompson Speedway, Thompson, CT
http://www.thompsonspeedway.com/

Facilities: Thompson has garage space with power for rent (2017 price was $25/bike, reservations not needed, pay at the gate), showers, fuel on-site ($$$) and is easily the best track for spectators. Fun, point-and-shoot.

"Normal" clockwise direction, narrated by Ken Condon

Link to original page on YouTube.

"Reverse" counterclockwise (which I think is more fun.... ijs...)

Link to original page on YouTube.

New York Safety Track, Harpersfield, NY

In addition to renting the facility out to track day organizations like TTD and TPM, NYST runs its own track days. Those dates are not shown in this thread. Visit the NYST site for details.

http://www.NYST.com/

Great track overall, with really nice flow and variety.

NYST runs both directions: "Uptown" is counterclockwise, "Downtown" is clockwise.

Faciliites: Showers, but no garages. Word has it that limited power is available and there are rumors of it spreading but I don't know any details. The paddock can be a bit challenging and is very crowded. The lower area is not level and the upper area by the building is nothing but a strip of pavement with people parked on both edges.

If you ride with TTD, camping is included in your fee. If you attend a "native" NYST day, they'll hit you up for $20 per night. They don't tell you that in advance....

Uptown:

Link to original page on YouTube.

Downtown:

Link to original page on YouTube.

New Jersey Motorsports Park, Millville, NJ

http://www.njmp.com/

NJMP hosts MotoAmerica, and is spectator-friendly. I've not done a track day here, but did a couple of parade laps of the Thunderbolt circuit when I saw the late-season MotoAmerica race with Ben a couple of years ago. The track has nice flow and looks like it'd be a hoot at speed. I don't know the garage situation for track days. Heads-up if you're trailering from the north: Getting across the Hudson with a trailer can be expensive, depending on which bridge you use. The farther north you can do it, the better.

Thunderbolt:

Link to original page on YouTube.

Lightning:

Link to original page on YouTube.

Now you have Bohemian Rhapsody stuck in your head. You're welcome.

As of this point I may not be able to attend due to the costs of racing motoamerica

I'll let everyone know if I can make it, I'd love to if possible. Riding with everyone is a blast

Pitt Race has no schedule up as yet. TPM will be running there one day only, 7/30.

I'll keep my eyes peeled.

@csmith12, you've ridden there, right? Should I be looking at other organizations?

We need to plan in advance... I have to line up schedules and funds.

N2, STT and hit and hit or miss others run there based on schedule availability. And yes, let's just say I have run there many, many, many times on the old track configuration. The whole incentive to go there now is a new track configuration that I have never run.

Remember, my preference is NOT run with n2, but yes... lets plan WAYYYYYYYYYY in advance.

As far as down round these parts go, don't look for any (near complete) schedules until Feb. Every now and then we get a sneak peek at a date or two.

For those of you playing along at home, I just added a new Palmer-reverse (remlap) video to the track info post. Complete with turn-by-turn notes.... was done for cars, but useful.

Initial thinking on which days

It's that fine balance between domestic tranqulity, the urge to ride and the need to do 5 days minimum to make the membership work.

Current thinking: One weekend per month.

4/22 season opener at Thompson
5/27-28 Memorial Day Palmer backwards
6/24-25 NYST
7/22-23 Palmer
9/2-3 Labor Day Palmer backwards

Extensively.

Started at "Old Loudon" in 89 and Bridgehampton. Raced for a few years until my bike was stolen. Got back into it in 2000 when I bought a GSXR600 and raced that for 5 years when I got an EX500. Raced the EX until '12 when I "retired". Was also an on-track instructor for Penguin for a few years including some Ducati Days down at NJMP.

First year at the Bridge

My first track experience (in cars) was at Bridgehampton. I miss it... it's a golf course now.

I'll never forget riding with the instructor and hitting Turn 1 at speed for the first time. Holy crap.... THIS IS WHAT IT'S LIKE????

I did this in the mid-90s, when Dodge was trying to promote the Neon as a club racing car. I was following a guy who had just bought one and prepped it. He was clearly pushing too hard, locking the brakes multiple times down through the low section of the track. As we came up the hill onto the front straight he lost it spectacularly... I went by him while he was airborne, upside down...... Fortunately he was okay, but the car, well......

I used to have an EX500, too, before I got my Ninjette.

Lots of new tracks since you quit. Thompson is fun... tight, point-and-shoot. NYST is terrific. Palmer is FREAKING AWESOME. Come on out!

Palmer in the 1:42 range. That's fast.....

This is TTD instructor Paul Duval.

Link to original page on YouTube.

Listen to the gear changes. For those who may be new to the track: you don't need to shift nearly as much as you might think. Paul confirmed that he's in 6th at the end of the front straight, drops down two to 4th for turns 1-3, then 3rd for the sharp uphill right hander at 4. The rest of the lap is run in 3rd, until he hits the front straight again.

This is what I've been doing too, but I'm one gear lower (and about 30 seconds a lap slower.... ).

You NEED to come ride with us!

At least four Ninjette members are regulars or semi-regulars at TTD events. Me (Andy), Ducati999 (Ant), bigballsofpaint (Jay) and backinthesaddleagain (Greg). Greg is the fastest of us and rides in blue group (TTD current groupings are black-blue-yellow-red, fast to slow). The rest of us ride yellow. If I do my job right I might move up to blue by the end of the year, but I'm in no hurry.

csmith12 (Chris) and Sirref (Ben) have come up to ride with us too.

Looking forward to it.
EX probably needs new tires though.
No lower was required when I stopped but was required the following year.
I'll reach out to TTD to see their requirements.

Tony is very relaxed regarding bike prep. TTD is a well-run organization and very safety-focused. The clientele he attracts are like-minded.

Given that you know him he'll probably let you pick your group out of the box, but he does like people to start at the bottom for a session or so to avoid the track-hero-bin-it-in-turn-1 thing.

Hit up the TTD Facebook group. It's how most communications happen. The closed group, not the business page...

I e-mailed him today. All set, no need for lowers on the EX.

He did feel the need to tell me that there is no passing on the inside, though...

Heads up: The Palmer noise lawsuit is heating up again. No changes yet (they already monitor noise) but the day may come when we all need to shop for stock exhausts.

This prompted me to start researching dbkiller inserts. Cheaper and easier to fit than I thought they'd be (about $5-$10, available from ebay, amazon, aliexpress, etc).

There appear to be two "universal" styles.

One goes up the wazoo and comes in a variety of sizes to accommodate different exhausts. It's held in by a bolt -- if you have some pipe sticking out of the rear of your muffler you can drill a corresponding hole for the bolt, or (presumably) run the bolt in from the inside and use it as a set screw. There's a movable baffle at the other end of the thing so you can adjust sound level (with the obvious tradeoff of greater restriction).

The other style drops into your muffler from the engine end, no bolts. Less to go wrong, but for 2" pipes only and not adjustable. You take your muffler off, put it in, and reinstall the muffler. That may or may not be easy. I tried taking the can of my R6 (which has been on there for over a decade) and no way.

In between this and Tamworth's noise craziness, seems a smart move to chuck one in the spares box, just in case.

Darn. Can't make the season opener in April.

Gig rehearsal up near Bahston.

If it gets done early enough I might drop by to say hello.... Thompson is more-or-less on the way home.

TTD just added another day to the schedule, May 8 at Thompson.

That's a Tuesday, which is weird, but they'll be there the day before for a non-sportbike day.

Special pricing deal for people who have, or want to, attend the April 22 date. Sign up for both April 22 and May 8 by the beginning of April and you get the two-day discount. If you've already signed up for April 22, just pay the difference for May 8.

Those Italians are too high maintenance for me, I should know because I married one! Ducati sold yesterday so once the 250 sells I'll look for the next track bike, I'm not quitting!
