Brakes feel funny
I've noticed this week that my brakes feel a bit off. I rarely use the rear brake on the street, except to help stay upright at VERY low speeds, so it's the front brake only.
Stopping distance seems a bit longer, and the lever seems to have a bit of a progressive lumpy squish more than a hard feel. I don't know if I'm describing this well, it's tough to explain. Do I need a front stand to check my pads? I only have a rear stand. Anything else I should check? I've only ever worked with drum brakes.

Possible issues;
1: glazed pads 2: air in system 3: water in system 4: crappy fluid 5: need new pads You don't really have to have a front stand. You just have to get the front off the ground and the bike stable enough to complete your work. I am sure ghost will be along soon and post the entire howto on brake maintenance. lol

Thanks, I'll see what I can figure out with the service manual this weekend. How could air or water have gotten in the lines?

Because brake fluid absorbs water from the air and water evaporates. Basically it's a race condition, what is gunna suck first? Your pads or your fluid? At some point one of them is gunna not be so good and need replaced.
