The driver just came back to reality and stepped on a foot-full of front brake.
Since has no brains to get hurt, I hope that he did hit his nose against the windshield.

The amazing thing is the guy in the truck didn't at the last second look up, see the car, and decide to jerk the wheel to the right smack dab into the biker.
Super lucky all around. |

Rider certainly got lucky. Good reminder that if you ever find traffic in front of you slowing or stopping in an unexpected way, assume that nobody behind you is as perceptive as you are, and get to a safer spot immediately rather than just stopping and hoping.

Um... Wow I'm speechless. Anyone have more info on this? Is the car driver ok? So glad that none of the bikers were clipped, either by the truck directly or the impact with the car sending it off the road and into the others.
More and more I want that bicycle lane to be a motorcycle lane, just get us away from less attentive drivers. Ah, news article.

Wait, that's a thing? People in oncoming lanes are expected to stop when a funeral procession is coming the other way? Before reading the comments on that news story, I had never heard of that custom, nor seen it anywhere I can remember.

Maybe a carry over from those massive funerals where everyone lines up along the path and bows their heads or gives a moment of silence to the one who has died? Stopping traffic for the entirety seems excessive, but slowing down and proceeding quietly would probably be my reaction.

It's usually a southern thing. I learned it as a young driver 12 years ago when I got pulled over for NOT stopping when a funeral was driving past the other direction. The cop tailing the group did a U-turn and got my ass. So yeah, it's a stupid law, but it is law in some places. When I die, please go WOT if you ride pass. I'll be giving you a from above.

At 0:44 ~ 0:45, you can see that it took five car-lengths of burning rubber and launching a 1.6 Ton car for the same distance for that truck to come to a stop. It was not the law, or the funeral, or the bikers. Speed + mass = kinetic energy Speed + mass + stupidity = crash + bodily injury http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kinetic_energy

So is it more sensible to pull more towards the middle of the lane if there is room? This way you are more safe from both of those situations? I'm so confused. In traffic i tend to favor the outside but can't get the idea out of my head that if someone can't stop and decides to swerve i am dead meat. |

Hindsight is 20/20, which means we can now all say we'd do the exact right thing to save us without any delay. But with that caveat, I wouldn't have stopped behind the car or even to the side of the car. If a car does something funky, I don't want to be smushed between whatever is behind me and the car I can see, so I 'd be beside or around it.
On highway pileups, I do not want to be the meat in the car sandwich, so whenever traffic stops short, the safest place to be is in between two stopped cars rather than behind one of them.

I think when you are at a traffic light or stop sign, if you DO choose the middle of the lane, be sure to leave a good bit of distance in front of you and the next car to give you more mobility to move to one side if needed. I typically pull to the side of the car in front of me, whichever side appears to have the best escape route should I need it. And then I watch my mirrors like a hawk, flash my brake lights, and stay in 1st until the person or two behind me comes to a complete stop. The distance in front of you and the watchful eye in your mirror give you time to react and get the hell out of the way regardless of where the car is. Have a plan. Yes.

Quote:
When a car or truck has the front tires locked, there is no possible steering or swerving, the tail just tries to move ahead of the front tires, the center of mass follows a rectilinear trajectory while the rest of the car rotates around it. If that fool had braked as he should, the front tires would have been rotating and his instinct could have made him swerve upon the bikers in order to avoid the impact with the car. If you choose using the car as a shield and stop by its side and the truck its it in an angle, then the car would sweep you, if you are standing too close to it. If you stop far away from the side of the car and the truck goes by that side in its attempt to stop, it would also sweep you. If you are ahead of the car that got hit, you get rear ended. Once you have to stop or slowdown in front of inattentive drivers who are moving faster than you and approaching from behind, good luck is all you may have,... unless you don't stop or slowdown at all until everyone stops moving fast. With that I am trying to say that there is no much that we can do to 100% avoid getting hurt once hell gets loose like that. If you hear tires screeching, start or keep moving and use a shield or two if you can; hence, the importance of always when stopped and constantly when moving visualizing at least one practical escape way. Even if you are irremediably destined to get hit, reducing the differential speed between the offending car and your bike will always reduce the damages (in a quadratic ratio !!!) and can mean the difference between riding tomorrow or facing eternity.

Stopping out of respect and right of way of funerals, ambulances and other emergency services is common here. I think it totally creates a hazard where there once was none. Sure, yield, slow down and make room but don't stop. If you want to show respect, pull over out out of the lane of traffic.

Thanks for telling me about this custom. If I rode south and saw this, I would likely go right around people who were stopped and wonder wtf they were randomly stopped for.
Now I'll know if I ever make it south. People don't do that here in OH |
