Almost low sided..

So, I was riding back from a weekend ride in the twisties, when I nearly low sided. This is what happened, or at least what I think. I took a sharp left hander and hit a patch of dirt. My rear wheel lost traction and went sideways. I chopped the throttle(not sure if I chopped it before or after the slide

), only to get back on it in an instant. My bike straightened up and I rode off with a fresh load in my pants...

Please tell me what do you guys think went wrong? Was it just the dirt, or could it be the fact that I chopped the throttle, that made me lose traction like that? Was it chopping the throttle that made the bike straighten up? Did getting back on the gas immediately save my A$$?

Please help!!!

Glad you made it out without scratching it or yourself up.
I would say it was most likely the dirt at fault, and chopping the throttle wouldn't have made the bike straighten up, I don't think.

Well, what went wrong was, maybe you didn't leave yourself enough margin of error to come to a safer speed to cross a more slippery patch of road surface.

As for how you handled the situation.. You already know what you did wrong (chopping the throttle).

Watch the TOTW2 section on dealing with road debris again or for the first time. "Practice your roll off as much as your roll on". It can save your a**.

Yea, it will make the bike want to stand up and will take a countersteer input or some other corrective action to keep the bike on it's current line. How much it wants to stand up, is relative to how much weight is transferred from the rear to the front. Could be alot via brakes, a completely chopped throttle with a lot of engine brake or a little via a smooth roll off.

Thanks for the replies guys!!! Yeah, I definitely need better throttle control. As soon as I lost traction, I panicked and instinct took over. Chopped throttle, left leg shot out in a wild attempt to stabalize myself, got back on the throttle and went my way...

Lol doesn't look that much of a non issue to me bro... And low siding for me could have landed my bike down a pretty steep cliff...

Actually you almost high-sided.

Usually when the rear slides and you chop off gas, your rear regains traction and the bike throws you off. Sooooo... good save.

Lowsides are generally related to front end problems.

Something similar happened to me on my ride home today. It had just rained and I was making a right turn. I completed the turn, shifted up, and began to reapply throttle when I felt the rear wheel lose traction and slightly wobble. It wasn't much of a wobble, but just enough to scare a baby turdlette outta me.

Ahhh... Thanks for the info, I didn't think about it that way... Highsides are scary

It's hard to say what saved it. Maybe you weren't that fast to begin with. I almost highsided on track once going 30mph. When you're slow and the bike regains traction, it doesn't shake nearly as abrupt/fast as it would when going, say, 80mph in a turn.

Extreme example but check out Casey Stoner's high side from a few weeks ago:

Thanks again Gurk... I knew chopping the throttle was something I definitely shouldn't have done, but geez, looking at that crash brings a whole new level of "HOLY MUTHA F**KING S**T!!!" into the picture... I was definitely not going fast enough, or I could have high sided right off the damned cliff... Gotta really work on the throttle off more consciously...

Relatively clear of traffic, yes, other hazards, no... My piece of s**t camera only let me record the first 5mins of the 2+hr ride... I'll take a better video once I have a better camera. The roads range from good to terrible and there's always loads of gravel and dust... But the scenery... Breath taking to say the least. Upto 7000ft above sea level with lush green mountains and deep deep valleys...

Hey bro, I am from Bombay, but I have a factory in Uttarakhand. So this time when I came here, I had my bike transported too. Totally work being able to ride the twisties for a total cost of less than 110$ to & fro...
