Old fat guy buys a Ninja 250r...

Hello everyone! I am new here after visiting another forum and thanks for having me. So, I am 45yrs old around 300lbs and I just bought a 2006 Ninja 250R after several days of reading. I got this http://tinypic.com/r/a4aquu/7 lil beauty for $1300. I have not rode in 25yrs and this is now officially my midlife crisis.

I am taking the next MSC that is offered and hope I did the right thing.

Any advice?

Thanks y'all!

Part of me is scared to death. Everyone is telling me just how dangerous it is. My wife supports me(don't know if it is because I have good life insurance) I always wanted to buy a bike since 1986 but life took over and that dream ended up on the far part of my backburner.

Last yr one of my summer youth workers started talking about him getting a bike and the dream moved up to front and center. He is a good kid just 19 and he now has a very nice Triumph Speedmaster. His father also owns a cycle shop. I called him today and asked his opinion and he told me to go for it.

I am excited but anxious as well.

that makes you a crazy little old man from Hawaii who knows way too much about motorcycles (especially the green ones) and is treated almost as a god by his fellow ninjetters.

Some anxiety is good. It will help keep you 100% attentive , willing to learn and safety conscious (ATGATT)

The bike will easily, safely carry 300lbs with the shock set high.
There's a 60 cent mod on this board to firm up the front....washers.
Just dont get sucked in to goin out and buying a big bike...after a few seasons on the ninjette I'd bet money you'll be a better rider than 99% of the guys on hogs

I am 6ft 4 and 275- 42 years old....bike pulls just fine. I did put on a Ninja 500 rear shock. My motorcycle mechanic did something to the front forks and made them stiffer so they would not dive so much with me. Made a big difference. The ninja 500 rear shocks are fairly easy to find, bolts right in..at least so on my 02 model. Enjoy the lil ninja.

should be a collar on the shock itself .. with maybe 5 settings, the further you turn it the tighter the spring gets, turn the other way it gets softer and easier to squash the suspension.

put a shock from a new gen on it. it will raise the back of the bike about an inch, though. If you're tall, it shouldn't matter. benefit is that the steering angle gets sharper and your bike will turn a bit better/quicker in the twisties.

I'm here just to check to see if this thread is about me. Guess not. Oh well, hello and welcome!

On the danger thing, just wear ATGATT and read up on biking safety. I've put some key studies on my blog here that show pretty convincingly that most of the problems you can get into are rider error. That puts you in control of most of your safety, which should be a pretty comforting thing for a more mature rider willing to prepare. Also, be sure to check out David Hough's Proficient Motorcycling, a great book that discusses safe riding technique.

Enjoy your time here. The Ninjette is a great bike, and we've got a great group here.

you buy a shock off a current-gen and then adjust the preload thingy. once you know the bike and decide if you want to mess with the suspension or not, I highly recommend the current-gen shock. easy, inexpensive replacement that offers a mild upgrade in performance and is literally a 15 minute job once you get the bolts unstuck

Found several EX500 shocks on ebay. Will they work well? I have had trouble finding an 08-11 shock. Is the EX500 adjustable?

Does the EX500 simply bolt in same as the OEM?

Read about the SV650 shock as well but I think it requires a mod.

Good to have a supportive wife, eh? I bought our 250 for her... she's ready to go ride with me... but for years before, she understood how important motorcycling was to me... She's a keeper, and it sounds like you have a keeper as well!

As far as the "dangerous part" goes... In spite of what my co-worker nurse and neighbor insurance adjuster say... there is no such situation as "they changed lanes and hit him... nothing he could do"... I've explained... "don't be there!" I make sure that, any time possible, I'm not in a blind spot, and I never just cruise next to a car... speed up or slow down... If they do something stupid... don't be there! OH... and I wear fully gear, gloves, helmet, body armor jacket / pants, and boots for every ride.

One of my buddies had a response to the "dangerous motorcycles" theory... I've known a couple of people that have died on bikes... I have known a LOT of people that have died in car accidents... Those car things scare the heck out of me... I'll play it safe and ride the bike...

Ride safe, keep your wits about ya, and you'll be fine... the MSF courses are outstanding... and at 45, you're still a junior... I'm 48...
