Buy a demo days bike... yes/no?
I'm looking at buying a 2013 kawasaki zx-6r ABS... New would be $11,999.. I've found a dealer with a kawasaki demo days unit with 1,932km for $8,799 ... Is $3200 off worth it for a demo days bike? (also comes with frame sliders which don't look like they've ever been taken advantage of ie: doesn't look dropped)
I've never been on a demo days ride, but I know they're group rides so I doubt the people would be abusing the bike...I could be wrong though? And I assume kawasaki would do the proper maintenance in those 2k kilometers. What do you think? |

I'd say go for it. Wouldn't it be cleaner than any bike you would find on CL or for sale in your area?

That's what I'm thinking...I'm assuming it would be, theres certainly a better chance it wasn't stunted, dropped, abused then some random on of CL... But keep in mind I'm comparing it to buying new. I kind of want the comfort of knowing everything about the bike and every KM it's driven... so I was looking at new.. but I don't know if thats really $3200 important..

It really will come down to your decision, but for me I'd say go for the "used" 6r if everything lines up in your head and making sure it's a good buy. If you have the money and are going to keep the bike for however long, buy it new. If you're thinking of upgrading (like most who get a 250 as their first bike), then it wouldn't be smart to buy it new. |

If the demo days in Ontario are anything like they were in BC (Vancouver), the demo days are guided and extremely slow paced. If that's the case, the bike should only have seen fairly low RPMs. There may have been a few people who distance themselves from the group, then gun it, but the bike is meant to do that so it's really nothing to worry about. I'd say if this is the bike for which you are looking, go for it.

Seems like a good deal. I've never participated in a demo day, but if I did, I would be reluctant to push the bike hard or abuse it. I'd be scared of crashing then having to pay for the damages. Not sure how that all works if you do crash a demo bike and I also don't want to find out. Haha. So what I'm saying is, It's most likely in better condition than that same bike on your local CL. Go for it!

Good deal. Do it.
They don't allow demo day bikes to be abused. When I rode a ZX-6R a couple of years ago I never even hit 8k rpm.

I agree that it's a good deal. But be a hard-ass and go for $300 less than the asking price. What's the worst that can happen?

Asking/financed through them is $9,799...$8,799 is cash (cheque, bank finance etc) price... Still ask for further $300? Guess it can't hurt.

If you are paying with cash, walk in with cash and lay it on the manager's table, for $8200 and say, "This is for the Ninja. Do you mind drawing up the paperwork?" Of course, have a few extra hundred if he plays hardball, as long as you are serious. It just might work. |

That'd be $10,700 Canadian, plus another $1000 for the ABS. So $8,799 still seems pretty good.
I'm thinking I'm going to go for it, the $3,200 savings is 2 years of insurance, a steering dampener and a slip-on... |

Was it their demo bike or an actual demo Day bike? There is a difference. My dealer had a demo bike and you could just freely sign up and take it for the day. Remember it still comes with a 1 year warranty as well from the dealer, which is nice. I was going to buy my local dealers demo bike but they wouldnt come down on the price, it was within 1,000 of the new one they had on the floor so i went elsewhere. But for a significant price difference off new i would consider it.

I know when I took a bike out on a demo ride, I definitely tried to put it through it's paces. I would test the brakes hard, I would accelerate hard and cycle through the gears to make sure the transmission wasn't clunky. Also I wasn't shy about potholes since I wanted to see how the suspension reacted to everyday riding on our ****** roads. Just remember ~2,000kms is a hell of a lot of demos. Considering someone would probably not put more than 15-30kms per demo (at most). When I bought my zx-6r I found a 2011 leftover with 0km out the door I paid just under $10k. |

I know at americade when i did the kawasaki demo the control riders were very adament about having the best demo. I didnt demo many other bikes, but many tickets could have been given out on that ride. They told us they were goign to make sure we knew how the bikes performed, a mix of twisties and highway. We were told not to get too far behind the group, as a result my friend was told to keep up on the 650 he was demo'ing. He was not going legal speeds before that haha.
Its the reason i bought the ninja 1000, so demo days definitely do work. |

I definitely wouldn't assume that. There really isn't any maintenance required before 2,000km. They might've changed the oil once, but other than the usual stuff you should be check before each ride, or at regular intervals (Oil levels, chain slack, tires etc.) it's probably never seen the inside of the mechanic's bay.

Here's some pics and a video walkaround... It was a bit dark and cramped in there so not the greatest.. The only issue I noticed is the tiny little V shaped fairing on the left side has the clip broken so it's a little loose, I'll ask them to replace that before I buy, if they don't, it's only $51.
The second rear wheel shown in the video is the non-ABS version which I'm guessing came from a track demo days (this one did not) you can see the difference between the tires, as well, that one doesn't have the kawasaki extended warranty offered whereas this one does, so I'm almost certain it wasn't used at the track.. Anyone see anything bad in the pics/vid? I put a (refundable) deposit so it doesn't sell while I'm waiting on financing...

Holy huge pictures batman! I guarantee my monitor is in the top 95th percentile of monitors (by size) looking at this site today, and even I had to scroll all over the place to see those.
Anyway, if it hasn't obviously been crashed, I can't really imagine what else could be wrong with a bike that was owned by the manufacturer and only has 1200 miles on it. It hasn't been ridden enough for the maintenance to have been neglected. I say it's a sweet deal - buy it. Edit: It has spools on it. That means that it either comes with them, or someone put them on it, presumably so they could clean the chain or something. |

I would have to say don't do it.
With the 2014 models out a lot of dealers have dropped the 2013 prices on the zx6r they are all going around $9,900 or slightly less you can get a brand new one for just a little bit more money. |

I was looking around as well but the abs is not as important to me. Keep looking around you might find a 2013 new and discounted with abs. If not I would say try and haggle the dealer down a bit more on that demo or get him to throw something in.
If it was me personally I would not touch the demo at that price and just go after a non abs that is new and with a new warranty. With the demo bike I would think you might have a hard time on claims due to its history. Abs is nice to have but you would still be fine on the bike with out it. |
