I don't see any evidence of gravel. You can see some dust get kicked up when the rear locks but not gravel and none of the other riders had any issues with gravel.
Either he panicked and applied too much rear break or he had his foot to close to the rear break and accidentally applied it when he didn't mean to IMHO. If he had his foot just over the rear brake and then he shifted his weight it would be easy to do.

Luckily the driver didn't stop in a panic, and I managed to keep the bike upright during some fairly urgent braking while gently standing it up, missing his rear bumper by about a foot. Complacency's a killer. |

Looks like the rear span up on fine gravel. I've had quite a few of those on our Eurotour when we ride little used winding roads & either the front or rear looses traction. If he had been more experienced he would have dealt with it OK. But he was just really unlucky.
Be careful when you can't see ! |

I don't like riding "too" fast when I can't see; if I don't know the road anyhow.

nop, the 300 as a slipper clutch, it wouldn't lock up at that speed,
this as just sun glare, and lots of rear brake |

He has ABS. Although I've never seen what my rear tires look like when I practice braking, but I don't think I ever recall locking up the rear (even in the rain when I slam on the brake pedal just to "test" the system). Mind you, I do this in a parking lot, straight up and down....not leaned over like he was.

The jacket with the red shoulder he was wearing is from the 80's. I had the EXACT same jacket that i wore all through the 90's. I can't remember who made it though. It was agreat jacket and i crashed way harder in it than this guy.
