I'm sure he could use that to his advantage in races... I know if I saw someone do that in front of me I'd back off thinking he was about to loose it

To my understanding, it's actually regular practice in races. It allows the rider to straighten up earlier, heat up his tires more, and as soon as it bites he can pin it on the throttle.

There's a bit where he looks like he is going to slide off the track. In response you can see him stand up and really kick the tail out to get a tighter turn in. Impressive stuff!

I was impressed with an overtake he did, too: All the other riders in the turn were sticking to the road and getting a good lean. Meanwhile he's on the outside of the turn sliding past them all.

'This

Looked like regular race riding. Or someone who is good at tracking.

I didn't see anything that looked like supermoto riding.

Wasn't that good of a slide video example either.

I was just learning somewhere about how they can get the rear wheel out and use it to slow the bike down for corners or something. It kinda slides when they do this.

I think I see the guy do this once or twice in the video when he flies across the lane off the throttle and his tire slides... in preparation for the next turn?

I don't know if it's the same idea or not.

Looks interesting though.

Looks like he can "step out" the rear many ways. brakes, spinning it up and have a great time doing it. And it does look like he uses it for pass blocking or was he just fooling around. Hard to tell.

Yeah if you use the back brake in addition to downshifting (just right I might add), the back wheel will move slower than the front, without locking up and cause the back to step out a little to help setup the turn faster and allowing the rider to brake later. There's a thread on here somewhere that has videos of Rossi doing it and other riding techniques.

That's unreal! I'm still trying to understand why counter steering works, and now you throw this into the mix. Pff - maybe I'll stop trying to understand and just accept that bikes are magical artefacts with inexplicable properties that probably work because of their interaction with fairy dust.

I felt it happen a few times. That's when I learned not to shift mid corner if at all possible because I don't know how to control that type of slide yet.

That one can buck you if you don't do it right, real easy.

+10000000

I tried this about 50 or so times on my ninja and after nearly highsiding at least 15 of those times, I felt it better to learn this skill in the dirt first.
