Cold start problems
So I recently bought a 2008 Ninja 250R from someone and it has major problems starting in the cold. And by cold, I mean 50F and below. The previous owner installed a DynoJet Jet kit, removed the snorkel, and I added a K&N performance air filter.
I'm probably going to take it to a shop because I don't have the time/resources to keep trying to fix it. From what I have read, the problem could be the idle mixture screws, idle speed adjustment, dirty carb, vacuum leaks, improper float adjustment, etc. After adjusting the idle, checking the float height, and cleaning the carb, nothing changed, and the only thing that seemed to work was actually using high octane gas. I did not really check for an air leak because after it started with the high octane, it got very cold (<20F) and I haven't been able to get the bike started since. The spark plugs were dark, meaning its probably running rich, but no matter how I adjust the idle mixture screws/speed, nothing changes. I have had a lot of people say that these 250's have trouble in the cold but 50 degrees seems unreasonable. If anyone has any advice that would be greatly appreciated! |

If every combination of fuel/carb adjustment doesn't work to make the bike start up easily, my guess would be the bike needs a valve adjustment.

ducatiman - yes, I use full choke. I have also tried it with no choke.

If you can pull the carbs yourself, I would send them to ducatiman and have him go through and adjust them. Chances are there's something not right inside.
I'd find a snorkel and install it also. There's no real benefit to removing it, and it can mess with the fueling. I'm not a fan of the Dynojet kit, as they use their own jet numbering system, and I don't think it's necessary for an almost-stock Ninja. Not sure how others feel about the K&N filter, but again, not a big fan. It flows more air - but filters worse. |

IF this circuit is clear....full choke (with fully closed throttle) will provide ample metered fuel to start. The fuel is relatively fresh...not months old? When off choke, you are obviously relying solely on the pilot circuit. Just a heads up...there is a great habit of folks to overfuel (much more is better) when jet kits are installed. Your jets need to be scrutinized....pilot jets measured to make sure they weren't "hogged out"....or possibly substituted with larger....likely unnecessarily. Did the bike run properly at any time under your ownership?

^ or the misguided belief that .....bigger = better ........more fuel= more power
Within my service, time to time I've seen some obscene jetting configs.
