rear view camera

Here's how I installed the rear view camera:

Firstly, you find one online in your country and buy it. It should obviously be for a car and come with a screen and camera. My set cost $40.

Secondly, you need to remove all your fenders, covers, seats basically everything.

Now which wires you cut into is going to be determined by how you want to use the camera. I want it to turn on and stay on when my bike's ignition is on therefore I decided to use a lighting connector. Here's a photo of the one I used:

(it's the small center one)

I was installing a few things at the same time, so we put them all together and soldered it.

After that, we tested everything got power and was working (it was) so we covered all the connections in electrical tape.

Put all the bike back together and voila!

We did use a meter to test that there was enough current coming through that connection. We didn't have to extend any wiring because it was all long enough and we made sure none of the cabling was going to be damaged by anything while in use.

I used my trusty heavy-duty velcro to attach the monitor to the windshield so I can unplug it while I'm at a shop or in an area they might steal it

Ah! I've wondered what the city light looked like. US versions don't have that.

How does the screen look in daylight? Still enough to spot a car coming up behind you or is the glare too much?

This is a very cool project for only $40
could you post some more pics of where you put the velcro with the camera detached?

and same question as nevadawolf: how's it in daylight?
but also, how is it when it's dark? no problems with the headlights?

ah, my questions keep coming: would it be possible to save the recorded image? Could be nice when touring with friends

EDIT: did you do something to reduce vibrations? I'm talking about both the camera for stable image, as the screen for damage...

Ride fast enough you don't need a rear camera.

Okay so here is the video for you:

Link to original page on YouTube.

A couple of things:
Firstly, no it doesn't record. I have probably the most basic one, but if you want to do that and you have a spare gopro around you could get this from gopro: http://gopro.com/camera-accessories/...omposite-cable with a monitor and then use it as a rear view camera and it can record I'll have a think about a cheaper option as well for you

Secondly, daylight seems fine. I was a little nervous on the video because I am usually the one behind it The video link doesn't show everything as true to life as it is. It really good for such a cheap setup. When the sun is directly above shining on it, sure, it's not great, but since that doesn't happen all the time I think it's great. As for night time, I am going to take a ride later and do a second video which I will post here.

Thirdly, as for protecting it, I am still trying to decide. It's not raining here in Johannesburg at the moment because it's winter so I have a few months to decide what to do about it. Suggestions?

And finally: as for the shaking, the gopro was shaking whereas the monitor and camera are pretty firm. I think that the velcro is a great idea for that. You can stick it in positions that there isn't any give. I hope that made sense.

Anywhoo more videos to come.

Brillant! This a great mod, thanks so much for finding and installing an inexpensive version. The one you got also doesn't draw a whole lot of power so its inexpensive there too. Now I am really really tempted to cover the blind spot directly behind me.

And puppy!!

Big surprise! Thank you for the video

I like it when people take their time to give elaborate answers on questions, I never expected a video though.

Night video!!!!
Again, the gopro moves more than anything and the angle isn't great but in real life I can easily tell when vehicles are behind me and what they're doing. In the video I went past streets that had lamp post and streets that didn't. You can tell it is a lot better when there are street lights but again at night people have their lights on so it's not too bad. I figured out a proper mount for my gopro so I'll record another day shoot but all is well and I love my little rear view camera.

Link to original page on YouTube.

Only weird thing is the lines on the screen but I think that's from my wiring, I think the other electronics are messing with it so I'll probably fix that in the future.

Cool mod. I've seen a guy with this setup. He used..

This camera with no guidelines: http://www.amazon.com/Esky-EC170-06-...d_bxgy_e_img_y

With this monitor 4.3" version (they have 3.5" as well): http://www.amazon.com/Rearview-Monit...D+TFT+with+cam

Looking at his camera I could see both left and right lane. He said he hardly used his rearview mirrors. He had to make his own fuse box? But I'm sure you can buy one like this: http://www.amazon.com/Shkciglightout...FJQV8Q6AD6P90C

One of these days I'll try this setup, but I would probably hook up a GPS before I do a camera.

Yeah that setup is pretty much like mine but without having to use a fuse box. I can see both lanes as well and don't use my mirrors anymore. I would say use the smaller screen so that it can rest on the wind shield so it doesn't shake too much. I have the 4.3" and I would have preferred slightly smaller just from an aesthetic point of view. Here's the link to the one I bought in SA:

http://www.bidorbuy.co.za/item/14460...Low_Price.html

It would be great if you could have a gps and rear view camera working off the same screen.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NplyUgp2KN0 is a video review from a guy who did this on his 500 a few years ago. He mounted his monitor higher up on the windscreen, parallel with the mirrors (see 9:20). He said this worked very well and provided a natural mirror view all the way across from mirror to monitor to mirror.

My car's headunit supports a rearview camera so I picked up a cheap Pyle setup (camera and monitor) from Woot, planning to just use the camera. Then I discovered that other style cameras might be easier to mount on my car, so I might end up not using the Pyle parts at all. I've been really tempted to put it on the bike, but haven't yet.

For sure! I actually love it in the city because I have a much better view of what is happening behind me so I don't have to strain my neck as much

That's awesome

Sad story: I've had my 360 for a while (as in 6 years) and then due to some trickery from the tech goblins I lost my profile points I had like 14k (not bad for someone who doesn't get a chance to play that often) Emo was an understatement! I tried contact Microsoft to help but they weren't very helpful. I think the call centre in SA isn't that clued up. Now I just play my PS3 because I can't bring myself to start again. Sigh.

That was so random. PC master race checking in.

Not a big fan of 360. Would rather play PS3, but if you're into gaming, PC is the ultimate.

I love my xbox 360, I've been a member for 9 years.

I'll be getting the xbox one. I'm a big halo fan. Also I have a huge gaming community that I enjoy that is on the xbox platform.

I know people have their opinions, I have a gaming PC as well, it is beast but it is lack luster compared to the consoles... Imo consoles are like our little bikes, they are not as powerful, but they are loads of fun.

I've never been big on play station *shrugs*

Someone makes a plug and play backup camera for the 250. I haven't followed all the links in the thread to know if any of them point to it because I am on mobile, but I will request that someone on a proper PC look it up and link it.

It replaces the tag light assembly.

$350.00

http://www.watchyoursix.com/ninja-25...ter%20250r.htm

Seems pretty steep even though it comes with a replacement wind screen.
