94' soft tail Harley

Not a big harley fan but my dad is looking at buying a Harley, is this worth it?

What would a fair price be for this?

Make sure it has a good title first thing! for that low of a price. Why is the guy trying to dump it off so cheap?

$3250 RBO? is a major red flag for me.

No we think your gunna have to work on it and possibly put another 1k or more into it to get it running right. What is the status of the engine?

20k miles, not seized. Can't hear it run or anything, but knowing it's not seized is a positive.

My dad just always wanted a Harley for some reason, I tried talking him into getting a sport bike lol but I want him to get what he wants.

Wow, around here in Hog Daddy country, that is a $5000 bike at the very least, even ones worse than that.

Later model Softails like that are in very high demand here.

Ninjas are cheap, garden tractors not so much.

Yes. A non-running cycle is a big gamble - even if it's not seized. There's still plenty of major issues (especially with a HD) that can cost big bucks to fix.

If he wants a cruiser there are many better options - have him look around. The only special thing about a Harley is the "mystique" - which is really just BS - and has nothing to do with the actual machine.

Why doesn't it run? Take a battery, two plugs, and some gas and try to start it. If it starts give him $2000 and you scored. Harleys are great. Most people who hate them never had one. I've had a bunch of them and loved them all.

couldn't start it because:

-Doesn't have oil in it (previous owner drained it out)
-Most of the wiring is disconnected
-Doesn't have a key (previous owner died and they couldn't find it)

We'll have it running by the end of this weekend or next weekend at the latest. I'll keep those who are interested updated.

Nothing, the previous owner started taking it apart to paint the frame (it does need a good painting) but half way through he got sick and died.

So the bike is in pieces (motor and tranny are still in there as seen from picture) but still needs some other pieces to be made whole.

We have plans to clean her up real nice and get her running. I don't like Harley's either, but I'm not gonna lie. I'm excited to start learning about this bike and help breathe life into her. Once she's all buttoned up she's easily worth 6k in the spring time (been talking to some guys in the harley forums).

I'll keep the updates going

Btw, it has all the pieces, headlight, ecu, fenders, gas tank, seats, sissy bar and back seat, exhaust, front brake, etc. etc. all in boxes which are laid on the shelf (no pics of it yet) so don't worry for the most part everything is there.

Hope she goes back together easy for ya, overall, they are simple machines.

Did they offer up any reason it was disabled in the first place?

What do you mean?

I honestly don't think there's a problem with the motor. In the stuff we saw a carb rebuild kit (rubber gaskets, etc. never installed, still in box) so i'm guessing while he was painting the frame he figured he would go through the carbs while he was down there. Regardless, I couldn't figure why someone would buy a carb kit if the engine was on it's way out.

It hardly has any miles. It will run like a champ once you get it going and mark my words you won't want to sell it.

Some updates: here is the old wheel, really rusted and even bent.

So we replaced it with this beauty!

Started using chrome cleaner and shining her up:

Decided to finish painting the frame.... decided to just do a rattle can job. Looks surprising good.

More updates to come.

Great deal!

When you first start it, don't be shocked if oil starts blowing out the breather. A common problem with H-D's that sit for a long time is the check valve in the oil pump for the dry sump system is bad, letting the oil past it a drop at a time into the crankcase, filling it with 20w50. You said you thought someone drained the oil? Maybe...

lol, no I haven't learned much but it is nice to see all the parts, etc. The learning stages are coming soon though. He's never worked on a Harley either so we are both sort of learning.

I think what i'm mainly going to "learn" from this is just how to assemble a bike. Not much of the technical stuff since the engine, transmission, and carb is already on it.

But we'll see Raining today, so it's a good excuse to stay inside all day turning a wrench.
