Laser eye surgery

Anyone here had laser surgery on your eyes? I seem to remember someone saying they had, but I can't remember who. I'm considering getting it done within the next year and just wondered about others' experiences. I've heard nothing but GREAT things about it! I'm sick and tired of spending life in contacts. Any thoughts on the surgery?

I think Nemesis was talking about it up here. I'd certainly consider it if my eyes continue to get worse. Need them for reading/computer work now, but am fine without on the bike so far.

That's lucky, I wear glasses everywhere instead of contacts. Only because I cant get used to contacts. Always dries out my eyes.

Be sure to do adequate research on the surgeon. Aunt had her eyes corrected but they messed up and it was worse and then they fixed it and even now it's not perfect. She's not a happy camper and who could blame her.

There was another post thatinstead of having lasik, where they cut the lens, somebody had the other where it scraped the lens instead. Cant find that post anymore. I was concidering that procedure even though it seems to be more painful.

I just got my Lasik done on Aug 12 and it was amazing, worth every penny.

Ive been wearing glasses and contacts for most of life(since i was 8 and 11) although i just turned 21 in june. Which also happens to be the earliest an optometrist would recommend the procedure being done

I hope this is just a joke and not a legitimate product. There is no way a handheld device can perform this procedure

My dad needed laser eye surgery. I didnt go in the room with him, but he says it's really painful. Then again, they were reattaching his retina...

I had Lasik done a few years back. I was scheduled to go in for an adjustment. Aka a redo, when the doc. got caught up in a underage drinking scandal and closed shop and vanished.

But the process was insanely not scary. Nor did I feel ANY pain during it. Other than the price, I would go do it again in a heartbeat.

Basically what happens is that they give you numbing drops in your eyes so you can't feel a thing. And a couple Valium so you don't stress out.

Then after a while they take you to what looks like a old school dental X-Ray machine. You look at the pretty light and don't blink, and in a minute or so they tell you that the flaps have been made. Switch eyes, repeat.

Then you walk to the next room, lay down at a giant x-ray looking machine, have your eye propped open (which you don't feel AT ALL) and look at another pretty light. The doctor lifts up your flap, and your eyesight goes out of focus, then you look at the pretty light again and in a couple minutes the doctor is putting the flap back down and you can see again. A little blurry maybe. Switch eyes, repeat.

Doc gives you some old blind people sunglasses and your ride takes you home where you pass the heck out for a few hours. When you wake up, your eyes feel funny. Almost exactly like you've been swimming in a chlorinated pool. More irritated that painful. Then you just chill for a while as the drops are still fading from your eyes, and the valium and whatnot, and as soon as you're ready, you go and enjoy having good vision.

Your eyes dry out REALLY fast and REALLY bad for like the first few months while they heal. So you're ALWAYS dripping eye drops in. NOT Visine! But preservative free drops. You also use anti-biotic drops. Just to be safe.

The anxiety was SOOoo much worse than the actual procedure. Of course some people DO get complications, and BAD ones at that. But it's rare, and for ME at anyway, I think the slight gamble was TOTALLY worth it, and one day again it will be again.

I'm a computer nerd, so I ravage my eyes, and they're getting worse again. But that's TOTALLY my own fault for abusing my eyes. Lasiks rocks!

That site for the home kit is hilarious btw.

Both my brother and my sister have gotten it done. My insurance will cover 10% of mine if I ever get it done as well. From what they say from having done research, it's really important that you find a well respected surgeon who can do the procedure. The ones that offer to do it for $500 are ones you want to stay away from.

I think I'll pass on basing my decision on a fiction movie. LOL! I've heard the stories!

Thank you all for your advice. I'm going to research it myself for several months before scheduling anything. There is a GREAT surgeon in this area who offers a free seminar monthly. I may attend one of those, but I'll certainly do my own research too.

That's up for debate. Google it. The closest you can come are opinions stating it was "very loosely based on" a true story. Lord knows what that means once Hollywood spins the facts. Others actually say it was totally made up. Soooo, believe as you will. Just not going to base my decision on a movie. However, I'll take your advice in the other direction and be sure NOT to watch it prior to deciding on the surgery or not.

I had lasik (with cutting and then laser) ten years ago and my vision is still 20/20. My wife had it done 2 years ago with the newer technology where it's just laser and her vision is not 20/20 more like 20/40 or something. It only took less than a minute per eye for actual laser-ing.

Had Lasik done back in 03... Best thing ever living down here in Florida, no more sweat pouring over your glasses at work.....

I wouldnt shop by price, who wants to go back to have it touched up??? Go with who has the best reputation.
Dude in the shop, his eyes were to thin for lasik.. So they put some lenses in his eyes.

Anyway, there are a few times now.. I have my head buired in some electronics.. Would love to take my glasses off to see better, but that just wont happen. < that one inch in front of your nose focus is gone

Honestly thinking of buying a Lasik@TheMall franchise. I can do it for you or you can buy the equipment off me for $99.99 and do it yourself. Insurance is much more reasonable than I thought for this business. Just shows really how great a product this is!

I had Lasik 11 years ago and have had 11 years of perfect vision without glasses.
I've noticed my eyes getting a little worse lately. I think it's just me starting to get old. It's still pretty good but in a couple years I think I'm going to have to look into getting a touch-up.

Are touch-ups normal? Do most people have to get them? Are they as bad (or as expensive) as the initial surgery? Thanks!

Ally, My wife was legally blind and had PRK Laser surgery done on her eyes. Prior to the surgery she wore coke bottle lenses. She had it done 15 years ago and is in need of a touch up. Her eyes are correctible to normal glasses. She was exceptionally nearsighted.

There are some conditions that do not have terribly good results--astigmatism is one I can think of.

Do your research and go with a doctor with a good track record. Treat all "promotions" with a grain of salt. Definitely get a second opinion and have all the prep work done by a competent opthamologist. Good Luck.

If you have the means, I would look at surgeons in Canada. They are actually the ones that are ahead of the curve and have more advanced technology because they are not limited by the FCC (I think that's the branch).

There is Lasik and Lasek, I don't remember exactly the difference but you should research those as well.

Here is a little bit of info.

I had PRK done in 2005. One of the best decisions I have ever made.

Photorefractive_keratectomy

After my procedure I had some discomfort and irritation to the eyes but not really classified as pain.

Well, I had the surgery Thursday. As of Friday, my vision was better than 20/20. My eyes are red and I look like a monster (whoo hoo! Just in time for Halloween!!), but I feel great and LOVE my new eyes! I'd recommend the surgery to anyone who wants to know what it feels like to SEE!

Awesome to hear it went without a hitch! I have an astigmatism in both eyes so I'm a little wary of looking into getting the surgery or if I'm not even a candidate because of the condition then that makes my dilemma much easier.

I'd do just about anything to have laser eye surgery...except pay for it. I don't mind wearing glasses except when I have to wear them underneath my helmet. I love contacts but they're pretty pricey and I don't like having to take them out if I want to go to bed. Glasses are more convenient but I'm sure that laser eye surgery would be even better.

Now that I'm 21 and my eyes have stopped changing. I really want to have it done. Been doing a lot of research and came across this.

Now I'm a little hesitate on having it done.

Prk was one of the best things I ever did... Better than 20/20 in both eyes. No problems at all!

23 year old #2 daughter is gonna get PRK in May. Hope it gets her good vision.

Too late for me: I'd be trading good unaided close-up vision for distance vision (and have to wear cheaters) if I did the surgery.

I've been giving laser A LOT of consideration lately. Except, I just received a new shipment of contacts, so I have to wait until I finish those lol.

I'm soo tired of contacts. I go camping fairly often. Contacts are a campers worst nightmare
