What is this hole..??

Please can someone tell me what this hole on the left hand side of the cylinder block on the engine is, and what it does.

Fuel spurted out of this hole when I rotated the engine during my valve adjustment session tonight. I know that my carbs are in big need of inspection for fuel to get anywhere like this; I am suspecting I also have gas in my oil. A different problem for a different session.

For now I just want to learn about this hole, and is this correct on my bike.

Thanks..!!

Thanks, Devin..!!

Hmmm....I wonder why fuel came out of there.

I am a little worried that the float bowl(s) are stuck and fuel is leaking into the engine. Or....maybe this came about whjen I pulled the tank last night.

I guess I need to drain the oil and check for any signs of fuel in the oil....

That is the drain hole for the spark plug wells. Both wells drain to the left side of the bike since that side is lower when the bike is on the sidestand. The only way for fuel to come out of there is if the gas tank is leaking. The spark plug wells are gasket sealed so that what's inside the motor stays inside. It's basically to drain oil leaks and rain water.

I don't own a pre-gen but (a little bit of) research tells me that you may want to replace your gasket after doing valve adjustment. I haven't done this myself yet (only 3,300 miles on my baby) but you may want to do this just to be sure.

So, after reading a bunch of info, I am fairly sure that my carbs are leaking gas even when the bike is not running. This is either because of the petcock or the float needles. I am suspecting the float needles, but can prove that theory tonight when I get home and can test the tank to see if zero gas drips out when turned to 'on'.

Either my float valve(s) is stuck or the rubber tips on the float needles are worn. I have the carbs off right now for a throughly cleaning and setup, so checking the condition of the needles should be easy. Another possibility is the height of the floats, which I will also be checking / adjusting.

Hopefully, it was just a case of stuck float needle(s) because the bike has not been run in ages.

The fuel that came out of the drain hole was most likely fuel that had leaked into the cylinders and was pushed up and out when I rotated the crank during the valve adjustments. The spark plugs are out of the bike, so any fuel in the cylinders would easily be pushed up into the spark plug wells and drain out through the drain holes.

Thanks guys..!!

Dave.

Both the carbs and petcock have to have problems for fuel to leak into the engine with the motor off. If you pull the hose off the petcock with the engine off no fuel should come out. If it does, the petcock needs rebuilding.

Excellent point. I think the tank petcock is just fine, but will test for certain tonight. I am still sure that my float or float needles are the cause, and this too will be inspected tonight. Found a good deal on new float needles, so I not scared about the $25 each price tag I saw at RonAyers any longer.

Had a '95 GSXR-750 that liked to leak gas into the crankcase too, but it's float needles were all metal (not the rubber tip style), and it was the 'O' ring in the float bowl body that the float needle seated against that was causing those leaks. Same issue though.

I checked the petcock last night, and it flows gas steadily on either the 'on' or 'res' setting, so the petcock is faulty and needs rebuilding.
