I have had my ninja for a few months now and just hit 10k miles. i bought the bike from a dealer and it has had several owners, so i dont know what if any scheduled maintenance was done. can you guys give me some major things i can have checked out or changed when i take my bike in? |

Check out the sticky threads in this section, and there are links both to your owners manual, along with the suggested maintenance schedule. Any info from the dealer at all about prior maintenance or recalls performed on the bike?

Here's the link to the maintenance schedule if you don't have that. Honestly, since neither you nor the dealer know the service history on the bike, treat it like nothing has been done. If you know how, go through everything and check over the condition of all the parts that need checking. Or, if you're silly like me, take it to a service place you trust and ask them to check it out. That's what i'd do anyway. Rather fork out the money to insure stuff was done and then just start the correct maintenance interval from now.

I’d recommend doing the following, in the following order:
Valve clearance check/adjust; Brakes (fresh fluid, check/change pads); Chain/sprocket examination (check/adjust, replace if warranted); Cush drive examination/shimming; Tires (check/ replace if warranted); Coolant replacement; Air filter (check, clean/replace if warranted); Oil & filter change, perhaps; Examine battery. Some folks might rearrange the order. Whatever. I bought my 2003 Ninjette in October 2012 with 24k miles from the original owner, who was perfectly honest about not having dealt with the valves, chain, and tires for a while. The Ninjettes are great bikes and perform better than they should. Kawasaki nailed it with the 250’s. |
