When I started my teaching career, I desperately wanted to teach kindergarten through 2nd. I got 2 job offers for 4th grade. Fell in love with upper elementary that I would have been too pussy to ever try if I had not been forced into it, and now I have enjoyed 10 awesome years with the older guys and found my niche.


When I have more time, I'll come up with a detailed decision tree for ya. Not at 6am on a work day.

I am suffering from it. I DESPISE common core, especially working all day long with kids who STRUGGLE with the regular curriculum and who are performing below grade-level. I'm feeling burn-out like hell, but I adore my kids! If nothing else, we laugh all the time and have fun as we learn the best I can teach them. They may not be able to learn 'common core' standards way of learning, but I can damn well make sure they learn SOMETHING while they're with me.

My wife teaches 3rd grade. She'll be stressed out from about a month ago until about two weeks after school ends (I'm almost used to it).

(Tell my wife to ride the Ninjette! It would relieve some of the stress. She took the MSF class 10 years ago and got here endorsement, but hasn't ridden much since then.)

Well if she meant that I refuse to live my life according to one of the racial scripts, i.e., victimized black person or tragic mulatta, on offer, then yes, I would say the same is true of my sexuality. I've never been interested in the heterosexual script of boy meets girl, boy marries girl, they have some babies and accumulate possessions until they die. Or the homosexual script of girl meets girl, girl moves in with girl, they get a sperm donor or a cat and accumulate possessions until they die. I have always wanted my relationships to be off the patriarchial grid. My script is more like girl meets girl, falls in love with girl, fools around with boy, makes art with girl, makes baby with boy, they all live together in a beautiful space building, a great community/family of friends. Then girl makes more art, boy goes traveling to find himself in South Asia, girl builds a boat, the girls take their child sailing around the world, stopping in at an ashram to learn yoga, meditation and organic farming. And that's only the beginning. I think relationships should be about much more than procreation and status and even romantic love; they should be about spiritual growth and change and making art and building community and exploring the full range of pleasure and sexuality.

As I was saying, if the young have not that revolutionary discontent, they are already old; and the old are those who were once discontented, but have settled back. They want security, they want permanency, either in their jobs or in their souls. They want certainty in ideas, in relationship, or in property. If in you, who are young, there is a spirit of inquiry which makes you want the truth of anything, of any political action whether of the left or of the right, and if you are not bound by tradition, then you will be the regenerators of the world, the creators of a new civilization, a new culture. But, like the rest of us, like the past generation, young people also want security, certainty. They want jobs, they want food, clothing and shelter, they don't want to disagree with their parents because it means going against society. Therefore, they fall in line, they accept the authority of older people. So, what happens? The discontent which is the very flame of inquiry, of search, of understanding – that discontent is made mediocre, it becomes merely a desire for a better job, or a rich marriage, or a degree. So, their discontent is destroyed, it merely becomes the desire for more security. Surely, what is essential for the old and for the young is to live fully, completely. But you see, there are very few people who want to live completely. To live fully and completely, there must be freedom, not an acceptance of authority; and there can be freedom only when there is virtue. Virtue is not imitation; virtue is creative living. That is, creativeness comes through the freedom which virtue brings; and virtue is not to be cultivated, it does not come through practice or at the end of your life. Either you are virtuous and free now, or you are not. And to find out why you are not free, you must have discontent, you must have the intention, the drive, the energy to encore; but you dissipate that energy sexually, or through shouting political slogans, waving flags, or merely imitating, passing examinations for a better job.

Just the same, there are reformist strategies that waste the energies of women, that raise expectations of great change, and that are misleading and alienating because they cannot deliver the goods. The best (or worst) example is electoral politics. Some socialists (beguiled by the notion of gradualism) fall for that one. Anarchists know better. You cannot liberate yourself by non-liberatory means; you cannot elect a new set of politicians (no matter how sisterly) to run the same old corrupt institutions - which in turn run you.

Why should I fear death? If I am, death is not. If death is, I am not. Why should I fear that which can only exist when I do not?

Why should I be bitter about someone who was a complete stranger until a certain moment in a day that has passed.

Education is an admirable thing. But it is well to remember from time to time that nothing that is worth knowing can be taught.

The only true wisdom is knowing you know nothing.

Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence.

Common sense is not so common.

If you wind up with a boring, miserable life because you listened to your mom, your dad, your teacher, your priest or some guy on TV telling you how to do your shiit, then YOU DESERVE IT.

Now, when you finally discover how something works, you get some laws, which your taking away from God, you don't need him anymore. But you need him for other mysteries. So, therefore you leave him to create the universe because we haven't figured that out yet, you need him for understanding those things which you don't believe the laws will explain, such as consciousness, or why you only live to a certain length of time - life and death - stuff like that. God is always associated with those things that you do not understand. Therefore, I don't think that the laws can be considered to be like God because they have been figured out.
