Chest Protector... Yay/Nay???

I'm considering buying the Icon Stryker Field Armor Vest to wear underneath my motorcycle jacket (jacket has ce approved shoulder/elbow armor & lightly padded back area)...

I figured it would offer more protection for my chest & back/spine areas (also shoulders).

What do you all think? Overkill on ATGATT? Or, do you agree with "the more, the better" protection?

Do any of you wear chest protectors/roost deflector/ballistic jersey? What do you think of the MX body vests? What kind do you wear? How do you like it?

Can I just do this full-body?

It seems that chest protectors are becoming more and more common for people on track. They've always been pretty common for dirt, but that's more for protection from things being thrown at you, as opposed to padding for when you slam into the ground yourself. I don't have a chest protector for street or racetrack use yet, but as of this weekend I have one for dirt use.

Get it if you want, it's cheap insurance. I have crashed with a Stryker on and I am 100% glad I had it on at the time.

I have the Stryker Vest that I wear always when on the bike. I've just yanked out the back pad on both my jackets and my suit so it fits better.

I haven't yet tested it (only wreck in it was the lowside on the track and i was in a full leather suit) but the fact that it covers my entire spine made me like it over the foam pad that I originally got.

It maybe be a psych out but it feels like better protection when combined with the elbow/shoulder pads already in the jacket.

I don't wear one but the guys I do see, have the alpinestars bionic vest and Icon field armor stuff. Nothing wrong with more protection and cheap insurance.

I was looking at something similar... I figured, since the jacket already has the shoulder/elbow protection this would be too much. Unless I wore this under a regular/normal jacket...

I like the spine protection on it... I do have the Icon Regulator vest, so I know the quality of the spine/back protector! (I kinda am admitting to some of my squid tendencies with mention of the Icon Regulator vest, shhh... )

I'm get the icon chest & back vest... More protection is hardly ever a bad idea. If you live in a rubber room with bubble wrap on everything and don't leave one spot I don't think you'd need one, that would be overkill. On the street with crazies what ever keeps you alive I'm all for it

I agree with the more protection the better, if you can afford the cost and the discomfort associated to daily use.

These are designed mainly against puncture (hitting sharp objects while skidding), while your jacket protects against shock (CE armor) and abrasion.

I figured, since a jacket doesn't have chest protection & just the flimsy padding on the back, i would just do like @NevadaWolf and yank the padding out of the jacket and wear the Icon Stryker vest underneath the jacket.

I haven't dropped it hard on the street, but I have off-road. I've never had an accident where I regretted any protection I was wearing. Some people may laugh at my extra caution, but they aren't the ones who are going to come to my apartment, change my diaper and feed me baby cereal if I get hammered out there. I don't care if I look like an extra from Road Warrior, I'll use all the safety equipment I can.

On long rides I wear a dainese chest and back protector.

EDIT: I am also pretty sure I look ridiculous in it. The front armor is thick. I didn't get the Stryker because I don't think the icon chest protection is rated.

I rock the icon Stryker vest as well. I got it because of the low price and the convenience factor. I figured that if I got a separate back and chest protector that I would be too lazy to ever use the chest protection.

How is the breath-ability? Does it vent well? Is there a difference between the Icon Field Armor vest/Icon Stryker vest (besides looks/style)?

The stryker line replaced the field armor line, that's all. Not much really changed.

I wear mine under my jacket, it seems to have an average level of venting that does an OK job, nothing to rave about. I have never worn it on the outside of my jacket like some others have.

From the looks of things, the Stryker is the new model of the Field Armor, I don't see much difference aside of some venting in the main chestplate and spine pieces.

I haven't had an issue with being hot due to the vest (only once overheated but that is because I rode through Hades one day). Lately beeping using it over my HD hydration vest so it holds the cool wet vest against my shirt. Under my mesh jacket, I'm still cool enough to ride comfortably.

It's pretty breathable. I have never been uncomfortable in mine. Mine says both field armor and stryker vest on it, so I assume we are all talking about the same thing.

Cool! Thank you all for the input...

I'm going with an Icon Stryker vest (unless I find a great deal on something similar).

I just scored on 'like new' AGV Sport Sebring 2 boots on Ebay for $60 bucks!

Buying gear is much like tattoos, very addicting! I really need to stay off CL and Ebay...

Bwahaha...

...long story short, rear tire slid out, then suddenly gripped and violently jerked my upper torso/chest onto the tank just before launching me straight up into the air.

I have an indentation in my chest.

So wear a damn chest protector!

Those that have the Icon Stryker Vest:

Is it true to size?

It has multiple adjustable velcro panels. But yes, it's pretty true to size.

I wear mine under my dainese suit (very snug), and under my Shift Avenger jacket (fairly loose).

Honestly, once you have it on, you really won't notice again until you go to take it off.

I have a Juggernaut shirt. Before I got leathers I used it under a mesh jacket...

I had this exact same fit problem. The answer for me was to put the belly band OVER the lower edge of the chest armor, rather than beneath it. That worked great. Try it.....

So it is pulling down on the armor?

one of the first items i bought (along with my helmet/gloves) was the red/black icon field armor vest. Wear it when i squid across the street and under my jacket on longer rides.

Um... kinda-sorta.

What makes the chest plate push up into your neck is the edge of the belly band. The lower edge of the armor meets the upper edge of the belly band, and when you bend forward it pushes the chest plate up.

So put the shirt on, and instead of wrapping the belly band only around your gut, wrap it around the lower part of the chest plate as well. The chest plate is then tucked inside the belly band.

Scored on a new w/o tags Icon Field Armor vest on ebay for $30 bucks + $12 shipping. I feel like a dog waiting on the postman... LoL!
