Tis the season (Stolen bike)

So my bike was stolen from my apartment complex this morning. Unfortunately for me it's not covered.

I had it chained to a lamp post outside of my apartment but they cut those and took them with them along with my bike cover so it's unlikely any fingerprints will be found. A buddy of mine that lives a few complexes down also had his CBR 1000 stolen and this is the second time it's happened to him.

From what I've read the reclamation of stolen bikes is pretty unlikely so at this point I'm just sad that someone molested my baby and that she's probably be torn apart in a chop shop right now and angry that I am taking a 3000$ loss.

There are cameras at the gates around my apartment complex but the two that were most likely to catch the thieves were down for maintenance because someone rammed the gate with their cage.

I guess the moral of the story is always have comprehensive coverage regardless of how financially annoying it is since I'm sure that's where this thread is going to head.

Also I'm not sure if this should go in general or a different section of the forums, if it needs to be moved you have my apologies Alex.

That sucks, i'm sorry for your loss, some people are a waste of a perfectly good life.

In regard to your insurance situation the expression "Buy cheap pay twice" rings true.

Check. Craigslist. I hope you have your License and VIN # written somewhere. Check all of the craiglists for 200 miles around you and see if anything pops up. Post on local motorcycle forums about your missing bike and any unique markets it may have as well as VIN etc. Unique markers can be anything from stickers and mods to scrapes and scratches or missing parts. Look to see if you can find any of your parts for sale.

Sorry this happened to you man - it's a really tough situation but make the best of it. At least be able to say that you learned something from this. Good luck.

Sorry to hear that! I live in a shady apt. Complex and cars get broken into all the time. I have my bike cabled to the car port pole, front disc lock, a U shaped bike club on the rear tire along with a cheap alarm and bike cover. I still worry everyday. The only thing I can do more is to get one of those really thick bike chains but those are pricey @$99...once I can afford it..I'll get one.

The locks that go on your brake disc and slot into a vent hole are great as there is nothing to cut off like a pad lock, and if they try hitting it the disc warps and they can't move the bike.

I'm pretty sure they did the old throw it into the back of a van trick.

I've been lurking craigslist all day and I have the vin number I've also called a few of the places around where I live that have been known to deal in stolen goods in the hopes that I might catch at least one honest employee who would take notice of it and report it to the police.

I don't have very high hopes for it though.

Very sorry that this has happened to you, Mike.

I hope that you have reported it to the Police, your insurer and the Department of Motor Vehicles.

They could have also taken it just for a joy ride and abandoned it somewhere.

Check this resource up:

Best luck !!!

They're mostly centered around the clubhouse and the gates, the main gates cameras we're, of course, down for maintenance.

I talked to the property manager and she said shes going to get corporate to look through and see if they can manage to salvage anything that may have been recorded.

Guess you never really think about these things until it happens to you.

The funny thing is I read this about two weeks ago and considered calling my insurance company and adjusting it.

Then finals came along and I got busy and it got sidetracked.

Oh hindsight, how you torture me.

Nothing you did man, in fact reading through the posts on that link more thoroughly and looking at what other people have done after their bikes we're stolen is probably only going to help me as far as security is concerned when I get another bike.

No news from the cops but around my area the police department is notoriously disorganized and it's investigators, from what friends have told me, are basically desks with hands to hold files.

I don't harbor any ill-will toward law enforcement though, no ones fault but my own for not having more security on my bike and the moral shortcomings of the thief who stole it.

The general update is this:

Nothing, not a word from the police or my property manager. The corporate office for my apartment complex similarly came up with blank camera screens.

The only thing of note that has happened at all is my buddy reported an abandoned van with what appeared to be the interior stripped out of it.

He waited for the police to arrive but they never did.

Thing is the van was parked literally right outside the entrance to my apartment which we found pretty sketchy though my assumption would be that if it was me I wouldn't leave any evidence near the scene of the crime. Then again I guess most criminals aren't that intelligent.

Mainly I'm just really bummed out about the whole situation. I pretty much don't get to ride at all this summer and I was planning on selling my bike at the end of the summer to help pay for a study abroad program next semester that I may or may not be able to do now since things have become tight financially for me.

I live in a three story townhouse where the entrance is on the second floor so unfortunately I couldn't do that.

They also don't have garages and the closest storage unit place is over 2 miles away

Just FYI...Cycle Gear has the Heavy duty Stockton chain on Sale for $30 and Harbor Freight has something similar for around the same price. I bought my alarm on amazon for $15..Someone touches it goes off. The only upside to the ghetto apt. I live in is I am upstairs with a direct view of my bike from my bedroom window..so within seconds of going off they will be starring at a boomstick.

I have the same view and am a gun enthusiast myself.

I'm not sure how I feel about shooting a man, but in that situation I think it would have been a tougher than usual decision to make.

Dang man, sorry to hear about this. I'm getting an apartment in a couple months for my new college I'm going to be going to and this is all that I worry about. I'm going to request having a ground-floor room but I'm not sure if that'll happen or not...

The few things that may have prevented this I can list for you.

(This is depending on your area and apartment style of course.)

Get a GIANT chain that would take more than a while to cut through if they wanted to. Thread through the back wheel or the frame.

But mostly just keep your bike out of sight. I think if I had parked it behind my apartment I would probably still have it. The fewer number of strangers who know you own a motorcycle the better.
In my complex I think this is doubly true. Generally I try to look for the best in people but while most the residents here are students that doesn't preclude them from dabbling in extra-curricular illegal activities.

Other than that I would say check out the link Motofool posted. It's pretty enlightening as to how to stop someone who knows what they're doing. (I'm pretty sure whoever stole mine did not fall into that category.)

You have been playing too much BF3 hav'nt you?

I would'nt want to shoot someone but I'm also going to protect what belongs to me. If I have to pull the trigger all depends on the criminal and how he reacts. I'm not a gun wielding cowboy but I am a responsible enthusiast who has a weapon for protection against anyone who might seek criminal intentions to my family or property. I have had to draw down on a couple tweaker thieves that were stealing stuff from my porch in the middle of the night. I held them there till the Sherrifs arrived 15 minutes later. Police cannot react quick enough to calls and sometimes you have to take matters into your own hands if you can handle the matter safely and responsibly.

also, more security the better, even a simple flashing led, disc locks front and rear, chain(s)... the more stuff they need to get through, the more time it'll take them, and the least likely they'll go for your bike, and your neighbors one

Sorry for your loss Someone tried to steal my 250 about a month after I bought it... I used to chain it to the parking block with a strong bycicle lock and I found a bunch of cut up sections where someone tried to break the cable...

I bought a nice disc lock with audible alarm after that to help deter them.

My new 636 has a fairly badass/fancy alarm system. It's top secret though

Sorry, but if you knew there were bike thefts near you, and you chose to park your bike in a known theft area with no insurance....

It kinda elicits a "rolleyes" from me.

Theives suck, but honestly, you kinda put yourself in that position.

My new 636 has a fairly badass/fancy alarm system. It's top secret though
You would be amazed how quicky that can be silenced. Insurance is the best way.

Personally, I don't trust any insurance company to do a good job covering my bike. If I paid $13,000 for my motorcycle and if I'll have to pay $13,000 to replace it, I'd expect $13,000 from my insurance policy, not $8,788.

Of my policy, theft/vandalism coverage only makes up about 10% of my total cost, so I still purchase it. I'd just rather take matters into my own hands and not have to deal with theft in the first place.

I wouldn't ONLY use an alarmed disc lock in a bad area, but it's far far far better than nothing. Even in the area I live where it's fairly safe, I invested a good deal of money into an alarm system on my new motorcycle that is pretty much bulletproof.

If your motorcycle isn't worth $13,000 why would you get that much back? Your saying my 250 is worth $5K?

But seriously, their are ways to get back everything you paid. You just need better insurance.
