front brake reservoir socks

I noticed no one really makes any brake reservoir socks aimed at the ninja 250since the reservoir is shaped different than most sportbikes. So I have decided to change that and plan to make some front brake reservoir socks for the 08+ ninja 250r if there is some interest. They will be black with "Ninja" embroided on in either red, green, blue or white. It would be a cheap way to add some bling/personalization to your bike. I am thinking around 10 for each color for the first batch, unless there is a huge interest.

I've always wondered what those are for.... UV protection, wiping sweat, keeping warm?

So fluid doesn't leak when the bike is on its' side - usually round in shape. Might look odd being square, but then again it might look good too.

Now that just sounds silly. Why would anyone want to put their bike on it's side? Mine sleeps on it's kickstand.

This is a highly debated question. Some say its to protect the brake from from breakdown due to UV light, others say its to help contain the brake fluid in case of a get off from spilling all over the track. Personally I just like how it looks.

Yeah and most of them appear to be cloth. Not sure how that would hold in fluid, but would keep the sun from hiting the fluid and heating it up.

That and if the translucent nature of the round resevoirs were that big of an issue, I'm pretty sure they would've made them completely opaque by now.

To be honest, I think that whole "wrist band around the brake reservoir" thing is just some fan boi crap. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

So, what your saying is if I want to be cool I should put a sock on my brake reservoir??

Of course! One with a nike and/or Jordan logo would be ideal.

If you don't want it to leak you would need a m/c reservoir condom.

Could the sock help with m/c reservoir sweating? Cloth wouldn't contain a leak but absorb any sweating.

The line coming from the reservoir sure does look like it's bent and reducing fluid flow. You might want to shorten it to get rid of that kink or maybe find a pre-curved line.

I think if he shorten it, it would cause more of a problem. But yes, it seems it may have a small effect on it. Looks good BTW Sam!

The reason for reservoirs is to absorb sweating that occurs with plastic reservoirs. When one uses ones brakes repeatedly and aggressively,( trackdays, canyon carving) the brake fluid heats up and expands creating pressure within the reservior. That same heat is absorbed by the reservior, expanding the material. If the temperature gets hot enough the seal between the cap and reservior body is compremized and leeking ensues (sweating). The sweat band/sock is there to absorb that leakage as brake fluid is very damaging to surrounding painted surfaces. Most riders never ride hard enough on the street to have this happen and the sock is just a farkle.
Hope that clears up the mystery. Though I like Floyd's rendition. Me , my socks are on my feet.( It's cold up here)

The sock absorbs brake fluid. Master cylinder caps are vented to the atmosphere. If you get some brake fluid above the bladder it can seep out the vent while you're riding. If you damage the bladder and not realize it, the sock is gonna help catch a mess.

The sock keeps the competition from seeing the color of your exotic brake fluid. If you get hooked up with some primo blue brake fluid you don't want the people in the pits nest to you having it at the next race!

Depending on the sock it can compliment a bike's looks with white plastic reservoirs. I like the argyle look.

Actually, the reservoir needs to be mounted farther away, as the line position is adjustable. Even though it looks kinked, the operation is perfect! With the ZX-10R reservoir you just have to remember to bleed the Master Cylinder FIRST; otherwise, you will never get a firm brake lever!! Ask me how I know!

Now that makes sense! (and from two sources!) Like Flashmonkey said, if UV were really an issue the reservoir would be opaque; and while the wrist band thing is never going soak up more than a trickle or so, that's exactly what you'd get with repeated aggressive use during a race or track session. So it's the right tool for the job, or maybe it matches your tank pad perfectly!

Alex and Floyd, thanks for the pics!
