Nail in tire

Is this safe enough to ride slowly to a shop and have it changed? Or is today the day where I learn how to take a tire off a bike and throw it in the back of my car

That's a screw, so it's unlikely to come out on its own. I won't try to tell you what to do, since it's a matter of safety, but if it were mine, I wouldn't hesitate to ride it to a repair shop. Personally I'd ride it home, put a patch on the inside, and put some tire cement in the hole to keep sand and junk out.

Others will disagree.

Rotten luck but you have never taken off the wheel? Well now you have an excuse to learn something new!

And besides, the repair bill should be cheaper if you take just the wheel. Since your in the area, inspect the brakes, chain, cush drive, sprockets, swingarm and any other bits that are hard to see with the wheel on.

Can you ride it? Hmmm.... can't say either way. I personally wouldn't but to each their own risk level and what they are comfortable with. If you're in the field, perhaps a well installed tire plug will get you home.

Use soapy water to determine how much air is leaking out.
Just a little will make me decide screw it all the way in and to ride the bike to a shop.
Too much to reach said shop will make me get some compressed air source and regular tire plugs, inflate the tire and insert one plug, trimming the external excess off (no need to remove the wheel from the bike).
The internal patch described by Jim above would be a great permanent solution.
Other than that, it would be using an inner tube.

Learn to work on your bike. Take the wheel off yourself. It's easy, I taught a squirrel to do it. Just keep track of the nuts (if you have a squirrel do it). The more you learn to do things yourself the more you will enjoy having a motorcycle.
