How did I make it home today....

So, I think the picture explains it all..

So the backstory..
Was on a group ride with a few guys from our local forum. Ride was about 200miles round trip and had a lot of hills, curves , etc. We stopped to gas up, and everything was fine with my bike then, (checked it), gas station was like 60 miles from my home, so somewhere in those 60 miles the brake fell off.. I have tightened the bolts before, so not sure why the hell this happened. But while I was riding through like 2 miles of construction zone, with bumps potholes etc, had some crazy guy in a truck chasing me and honking. So I stopped.. and hes like, do you know your rear brake is like hanging off? So yeah... I ziptied it and slowly rode home.

The brake pad is scratched a bit and the brake pads are chipped off a little, but seem to be okay.

That... is not good...

Did you service the brakes recently, or have someone service them for you? If the bolts are torqued down correctly, they shouldn't work loose like that.

Use a torque wrench and loctite.

that is certainly absent minded mechanic work lol

Glad you didn't have an accident.

Forget the Loctite, just tighten the bolts next time.

We call my friend "Fingertight" because he's always trying to do two or three things at once, (phone, bs'n, "where's my beer?") then forgets to tighten things down.

Lesson learned?

Well the bike only has 10xx miles right now, and I did check all the bolts at around 500 miles and they seemed tight to me. There was no service for the brakes yet. Man I am paranoid now.. going to go check every bolt, not sure what the guy before me did with this bike.. -.-

This happened to me once, but the caliper wasn't all the way off just one bolt fell out and the caliper was most of the way off. Luckily I don't use the rear brake much. Didn't notice until I got home.

Crazy cuz you claim no service that would require removing the back brake caliper. When I took mine off the first time those bolts were on there real good. I ended up using 3/8" ratchet with hex key socket to break them loose.

hmmmm.... you will be surprised what you can ride though, parts coming off, fairings wrapping around your foot while leaned over and what not.

Put it back on and ride on. A lil dab of silicone on the bolts should solve the problem in the future without the issues that come along with locktite. If not, safety wire that stuff.

Question for you, did you miss a service interval? Checking those bolts (and a lot of others) are part of the maintenance plans. Food for thought...

One thing everyone seems to have missed is: Do you ever use your rear brake? You should have noticed the problem the first time you applied the rear brake and the pedal just moved with no resistance. Glad to hear you did not crash.

I do but not as much as the front, I swear I felt no difference =|

Also what I noticed is that where the bolt goes into, you have the actual frame holes and then the caliper its self with the bolt holes. A m7 bolt fits the holes in the caliper, but the holes in the frame are like m10, m12. is it suppose to be like that? Because if its only being held by the part in the caliper, its barely being held on.

Both are threaded, so I would assume it would be suppose to be held by both?
