Track Bike build questions
Hi all, i'm sure this has been covered before but I could not find a thread for it. I am looking to build a track bike and wanted to know what are the must have mods. I am looking to go racing on the cheap and hence the 250.
What I have in mind so far: brake pads (suggestions?), steel braided lines and fairings. Planning to get the woodcraft rear sets and clipons. They don't mention about gp-shift though. Leo vince full system and dynojet kit. Do I gain much by changing the air filter? What about chain and sprockets? I have heard of 515 sprockets for the 250, anyone use it? Is the stock gearing good enough? If I go -1 in the rear, do I lose a lot of initial grunt? Is it a huge gain over stock at the top end? Cheers! Menon |

Welcome Max!
Have a look here. Your main mods are; Tires Full Exhaust/Jetting Hi-Flow filter Front suspension Front steel brake line HH pads Clipons Rearsets Track bodywork Rear shock In just about that order too. Stick to stock gearing and customize as you see fit per track. I have tried all kinds of strange gearing, but always come back to stock. And... I aint really slow either.

Track bodywork?
What does this entail? Delete the front headlight to save weight and find aftermarket rear tail fairings? A link is worth a thousand words.

Front/side fairing (minus all lights) oil tight lower Tail fairing (no tail light) There are other brands of race/track bodywork, this is just one. Some riders hate hotbodies and prefer another brand.

^ I can verify sharkskinz makes a quality product, my track gsxr has fairings from them on it and they look like they've held up very well through the bikes crashes

lmao what are they using now some form of material that absorbs energy from the sun yet still protects everything in the shuttle on descent?

well they use lots of things. the rocket nozzle is made from something called niobium which doesn't melt until about 5000f. that's kinda cool and rocket sciencey.

do they have the nozzle set up in such a way that it directs the airflow around the shuttle on descent? that'd be brilliant, they could get away with using materials that are a lot less heat resistant on the rest of the shuttle if they did that

did you know that the original moon lander didn't use conventional rockets because they weren't sure of the reliability of starting it on the moon, so instead they used hydrogen peroxide engines which spray the peroxide onto a stainless steel catalist which splits it into hydrogen and oxygen gases and releases energy and increases pressure which is also whats used on old school submarine torpedoes which if you like movies, they made a movie about one called the widowmaker which had a peroxide leak in one of the torpedoes and it reacted with the side wall and caused an explosion... uhhhh... anyway. science!

Anyone used motofairings? They seem to be selling for ~$400 shipped. Reading online, it seems like a hit or miss. Trying to keep this cheap, so one option is to use the rashed oem fairings and get a belly pan. Is that something that's acceptable for the afm?
As far as the mods you guys mentioned, I had a few questions: Tires - what is the size you use for the rear? I saw pirelli has only a 120/70 Suspension - For now i plan to keep the rear stock and change springs at the front for my weight. Maybe use a heavier oil? Rest of the stuff I have ordered and should be here in the next few days. Thanks again! Menon |
